Ik ben een beetje doof. Zo hoor ik niet zo goed in drukke ruimtes of als er harde muziek aan staat en dat kan nog wel eens voor grappige of vreemde situaties zorgen. Zo stond ik ooit naast Gordon aan de bar en hij zei iets tegen me. Geen idee wat, dus ik knikte maar ja en lachte erbij. Hij had gelijk door dat ik hem niet verstaan had, want hij kwam dichterbij en fluisterde in m’n oor: als je me verstaan had, zou je niet zo lachen! Nu kan ik meestal wel om Gordon lachen, dus ik ga er maar vanuit dat het een flauwe opmerking was….maar toch? Na soms wel 3x te vragen wat iemand zegt op feestjes, doe ik soms dus maar net of ik het hoor en lach maar wat.
Daarnaast staat m’n tv en ipod altijd standje hard, harder, hardst, terwijl ik dat zelf dus helemaal niet vindt. Dus als iemand in de trein vraagt of m’n muziek wat zachter kan of m’n buren letterlijk kunnen verstaan welk programma ik aan het kijken ben, ben ik ook altijd wat verbaasd.
Hoe dit komt? Ik heb wel een vermoeden. Als tiener had ik namelijk het tofste baantje ooit, als catering medewerker bij concerten. En met z’n backstage pas mocht je overal komen, dus ja, ook voor de hekken die het podium van het publiek scheiden en je dus zo’n beetje in de boxen staat. Tuurlijk zag ik wel mensen met oordopjes, maar ik dacht eerlijk dat die dus niks van het concert meekregen en daarnaast waren oordopjes ook helemaal niet cool.
Wat ook niet zo cool is dat ik nu na een avond stappen, concert of een avond muziek luisteren met een liveband erna nog uren wakker lig door zo’n mega vervelende piep in m’n oor.

Die angst die ik vroeger had, dat je dan niks meer mee zou krijgen van het optreden of de dj, bleek dus totaal ongegrond. En waar m’n vriendinnen soms echt last hadden van hun oren, stond ik gewoon heerlijk te genieten van de muziek.
Het enige nadeel wat ik had was, omdat ik al gehoorbeschadiging heb, ik met de oordopjes in m’n vriendinnen niet zo heel goed kon verstaan. Iemand met “gezonde” oren zal hier waarschijnlijk een stuk minder last van hebben. Dus tijdens het eten heb ik ze maar even uit gedaan. En gelukkig krijg je er een heel leuk buisje bij waar je ze mooi in kan bewaren en die ook perfect in een klein tasje of aan je sleutelbos past, zodat je de dopjes niet kwijt raakt of beschadigen.
Maar de ultieme test kwam eigenlijk pas na het festival, toen ik in bed lag. Normaal geniet ik dus nog uren na van zo’n feest en met geniet bedoel ik dus juist het tegenovergestelde want die piep in je oren is echt zo vreselijk irritant en soms zelfs pijnlijk. Zoals ik al eerder schreef, die piep is dus verleden tijd. Geen piep, niet eens een ruisje!!! Als ik dit toch eens eerder had geweten. I’m a little deaf. I don’t hear that well when in crowded places or when the music is load and that can sometimes cause funny or weird situations. One time i was standing at the bar next to Gordon (Dutch singer/known for being rude in a funny way) and he said something to me. No clue what he said, i just nodded yes and smiled at him. He knew immediately that i didn’t hear what he had said, as he leaned closer and whispered in my ear: if you heard what i said, you wouldn’t be smiling now! Now most of the time i can laugh at his comments, so i just assume it was a joke…but still? After asking people 3x times what they said at partyies, i sometimes just pretend to understand what they say and laugh a little.
Besides that my tv and ipod are always on level loud, louder, loudest, eventhough i think it’s just a normal level. So when someone in the train asks if i can turn the music down or my neighbors can literally hear what i’m watching on tv, i’m always a little surprised.
What caused this? I have a suspicon. As a teenager i had the most amazing afterschool job, as a catering employee at concerts. And as the backstage pass allowed me to go everywhere, i would watch the shows in front of the crush barriers and in between the stage and yep that means you are almost standing in the speakerboxes. Ofcourse back than i did see people wearing ear protection, but to be honest, i thought they wouldn’t hear a thing of the concert itself and besides that, earplugs just weren’t very cool.
What also very uncool is that now after going out, attending a concert or listing to a live band i lay in bed awake for hours because of a mega irritating beep in my ear.

So during dinner i took them out. Luckly it comes with a nice holder which fits perfectly in a small bag or on your keychain, in which you can keep them safe and won’t lose them.
But the ultimate test came after the festival, when i was laying in bed. Normally i lay awake for hours afterwards and not because i’m too energized of the party but because i have a beep in my ear that is so irritating and sometimes even painfull. But like i wrote earlier, thanks to Ravesafe that’s a thing of the past. No beep, not even white noise!!! If only i had knew this before.
