Misschien een beetje gewaagd om dit een 2 dagen na Bevrijdingsdag te plaatsen, maar… ja, IK HOU VAN DUITSLAND!

Ik hou van shoppen in Duitsland, Duitse supermarkten, Duitse kerstmarkten, Duitse pretzels, Duitse curryworsten, Duitse service en Duitse merken. Winkelen doe ik het liefst in Dusseldorf of als het regent in CentrO, boodschappen het liefst in Kleve, m’n favoriete sportmerk is Duits (Adidas) en kerstmarkten zijn nou eenmaal het leukst over de grens. Dat ik nog nooit in Berlijn ben geweest is dan ook best apart maar het staat nog op m’n To See-lijstje. Het enige wat ik iets minder vindt is de Duitse taal, maar ach, Nederlands klinkt voor buitenlanders ook niet echt romantisch.

Vroeger kwamen we vaak in Duitsland omdat m’n vader voor een Duits bedrijf heeft gewerkt dus wellicht komt daar m’n liefde voor het land vandaan, of gewoon omdat Dusseldorf, en dan bedoel ik vooral de Kö (Königsallee voor diegene die niet zo bekend zijn in Dusseldorf), zo lekker luxe is en me doet denken aan shoppen op 5th avenue of Rodeo Drive in Amerika. Of het feit dat de service nog zo lekker hoog is in Duitsland en mensen je nog zo graag helpen in een winkel maar op een niet opdringende manier.

Dus 1 x in de zoveel tijd plan ik een dagje uit naar Dusseldorf en twee weken geleden was het weer zover. Ik heb zo m’n eigen lievelingsplekjes in deze stad en dacht misschien leuk om deze met jullie te delen, dus hierbij mijn To Do/To See in Dusseldorf:

Parkeren: kom je met de auto stel je navigatie in op de Heinrich Heine Allee, dan is de parkeerplaats Kunsthalle lekker dicht bij de Altstad (vanuit daar loop je zo het winkelgebied in). De parkeerplaatsen zijn vrij smal maar mocht je daar moeite hebben dan hebben ze ook wat bredere parkeerplaatsen (die dan wel weer vrij seksistisch wordt aangegeven met het volgende bord, maar ach dat zien we voor deze keer door de vingers).

Kom je deze parkeerplaats uit, dan zit gelijk aan de linkerkant een nieuw zaakje. Diegene die vaak in Spanje komen, kennen het vast: Cuplé (Neustrasse 6, Altstad, Dusseldorf). Dit was de eerste keer dat ik er naar binnen liep maar was direct verliefd. Mooie leren schoenen en tassen in de leukste kleurtjes. Mooie jurkjes en topjes en daarnaast nog veel schattige sieraden en accessoires. Echt een aanrader als je een one of a kind stuk zoekt, want ze heeft maar een kleine oplage in de winkel hangen en kan de stukken ook niet meer nabestellen. M’n moeder kocht er een leuk armbandje en helaas was ik zo dom om echt een geweldige ketting te laten liggen, want toen we uit gewinkeld waren was de winkel helaas al gesloten.

 

Meestal begin ik m’n dagje Dusseldorf bij de duitse bakker voor een heerlijke pretzel of duits broodje of ik loop door naar de Starbucks. Vroeger zat de Starbucks op de Kö en was het echt m’n favoriete plekje om boven te zitten en lekker mensen te kijken. Helaas zit daar nu een Chanel winkel, maar gelukkig zit er in Altstad ook een hele leuke. (om de hoek zitten de restaurants waar ik zo op terug kom).

Shoppen:

M’n favoriete Duitse kledingwinkel is Kult en zit tegenover deze Starbucks in Altstad maar deze is vrij rommelig, dus kies ik er meestal voor om naar de Kö te gaan waar die ook zit. Ze hebben verschillende merken, van Adidas, Calvin Klein, Love Moschino maar ook hele betaalbare merken (soms scoor je al iets superleuks voor een tientje). De mix van goedkoop en duur vindt ik dan ook het erg leuk en de inrichting van de winkel is ook lekker funky (grote unicorns of bulldogs).

Liever een beetje meer on a budget, m’n moeder is gek op Promod (en ik kocht daar deze keer echt een superleuke flamingo trui voor maar €35,- en ze hadden ook superleuke jurkjes). De collectie verschilt nog al. Dit keer was ie superleuk terwijl we vorige keer er al snel weer klaar waren. Schuin tegenover Promod vindt je Gina Tricot, die ideaal is voor accessoires zoals panty’s, sokken of grappige kettinkjes.

Loop je wat verder door dan zit er nog een browbar van Benefit, alleen al de kleurjes maakt dat je naar binnen wilt. In Amerika heb ik bij de browbar m’n wenkbrauwen laten doen en nu kan ik dus (bijna) niet meer zonder Gimme Brow. Niet goedkoop maar de perfecte manier om, in mijn geval, lichte wenkbrauwen wat voller te laten lijken zonder direct te moeten verven. Een paar deuren verder zit Lush, waar ik ook altijd even naar binnen loop. Ik weet dat deze ook in Nederland zit maar niet echt bij mij in de buurt dus als ik in Dusseldorf ben loop ik er nog wel eens naar binnen voor een gouden bath bomb (mijn favoriet omdat het zo lekker luxe voelt).

Er zitten nog veel meer leuke zaakjes in Altstad maar dit zijn een paar van mijn favorieten. Uiteraard vind je er ook de Zara, Mango, H&M, Hunkemoller en nog meer winkels die je ook in de grote steden in Nederland te vinden zijn, maar soms hebben ze wel een iets andere collectie dus ben je fan van 1 van deze winkels dan zou ik toch even naar binnen wippen nu je er toch bent. Ik was wel erg verdrietig om er achter te komen dat Dunkin’ Donuts net als de Adidas Neo winkel er niet meer waren 🙁 ! Maar voor m’n lijn en portemonnee was dit misschien wel beter ;)!!!

Dan steek ik meestal de Heinrich Heine Allee over naar de Kö (denk Rodeo Drive/5th Avenue). Eerst kom je nog langs het Breidenbacher Hof hotel, wat nog steeds ooit op m’n To-Sleep lijstje staat en dan vooral met de kerst want dan is de hal echt zo mooi versierd. (maar denk dat ik dan wel eerst de loterij moet winnen). Een paar deuren verder zit Michael Kors, m’n favoriete merk en ook dit keer werd ik verliefd op een tasje maar heb me in kunnen houden en zet het op m’n wishlist (het lijstje met dingen om voor te sparen).

Als je via het bruggetje oversteekt zie je alle mooie winkels al, van Tiffany’s tot Chanel en Gucci. Allemaal prachtig en leuk om te window shoppen of even naar binnen te lopen (voel je niet geïntimideerd door de bewakers bij de deur, het personeel is over het algemeen heel vriendelijk en vind het echt niet vreemd als je niks koopt). Gelukkig zitten er in deze straat (Königsallee) ook goedkopere winkels, zoals Zara Home en Riviera Maison. En er zitten twee winkelcentra, een die voornamelijk een Saturn is maar wel een leuke foodcourt heeft onderin. En dan is het nog de Kö galerie, waar in de kelder m’n favoriete drogist zit, de DM en een Rewe, een wat chiquere supermarkt, en voor diegene die m’n guilty pleasures wel eens leest, weet dat ik hier heel vrolijk van wordt. Waar ik ook heel vrolijk van wordt is de kunstgalerie die bovenin zit (Mensing Galerie). Ik heb niet echt verstand van kunst maar weet wel dat als ik Pop Art zie, dit meestal een glimlach op m’n gezicht tovert. En deze galerie is ermee gevuld (denk aan Britto, James Rizzo). Er heeft ooit een afbeelding van Marilyn Monroe gehangen die helemaal gemaakt was met gummibeertjes van Haribo. En ook nu zag ik genoeg wat ik wel in m’n huis zou willen…maar voor nu is het vooral erover dromen…tot ik ooit rijk wordt.

Als je niet gelijk de Kö op loopt maar rechtdoor gaat nadat je bent overgestoken bent bij het bruggetje (en dan langs de Miu Miu) dan zit daar de Shadow Arcade. Een winkelcentrum waar m’n favoriete woonwinkel zit, Habitat. Leuk voor de foodbloggers onder ons, want ze hebben altijd erg mooi servies, glazen of andere dingen om je foto’s mee op te vrolijken. Ook in dit overdekte winkelcentrum vindt je een foodcourt in de kelder met heerlijke sushi, een mexicaans restaurant en tegenwoordig ook een gezonde sap/smoothie bar, die we natuurlijk wel even moesten uittesten. M’n moeder nam een vanillesmoothie (vanilleyoghurt, aardbei, mango en banaan) en ik een Sweet Honey (aardbei, banaan, honing, sinasappelsap & frozen yoghurt). Beide heel erg lekker. Maar je kon ook kiezen voor Groene smoothies, frozen yoghurt of salades. Natuurlijk kun je kiezen hier ook gelijk een hapje te eten. Maar ben je gek op Italiaans dan moet je toch even terug naar Altstad, want hier zit in de Wallstrasse (om de hoek bij de Starbucks) twee van m’n favoriete restaurants in Dusseldorf. Toevallig ook allebei Italiaans. De een is wat chiquer en duurder maar oh zo lekker, A Tavola en serveert echte Italiaanse gerechten maar verwacht geen pizza’s. De olijfolie is een specialiteit waar je vooraf van geniet met heerlijk brood. Dit keer hadden we meer zin om een pizza te delen dus gingen we naar de buren (een paar deuren verder), La Candeletta. Het interieur is niet echt heel mooi maar het eten is er heerlijk. 1 van de betere pizza’s die ik ooit gegeten heb met een superdunne bodem, waardoor we nu al voor de 3de keer terugkomen. Erbij deelde we dit keer een Vitella tonato en caprese salade en waren met z’n tweeën ongeveer €35 kwijt, inclusief een fles van m’n favoriete water, San Pellegrino.

Benieuwd geworden, de leukste tijden om Dusseldorf te bezoeken is in de zomer, want dan gaan veel mensen na het werk een drankje doen en zijn de terrassen en biertafels bomvol wat voor een gezellig sfeertje zorgt of ga rond de kerst (november/december) dan zijn er verschillende kerstmarkten door de hele stad en ziet het er allemaal magisch uit met al die lichtjes, mooie etalages en gezellige stalletjes.

Nachtje blijven slapen on a budget: Hotel an der Oper zit in Altstad dus je loopt zo het gezellige winkel & uitgaansgebied in (en naast de Kunsthalle parkeerplaats, dus je hoeft niet ver te sjouwen met je koffer) of kijk online voor aanbieding voor hotel Leonardo Royal Hotel aan het eind van de Königsallee (met zwembad om heerlijk te ontspannen na een dag shoppen).

Maybe not the best thing to admit two days after celebrating Liberation day, but, well… I LOVE GERMANY!

I love shopping in Germany, German supermarkets, German christmas markets, German pretzels, German curry sausages, German service and German brands. For shopping i prefer Dusseldorf and when it rains CentrO, for grocceries Kleve, my favorite sport brand is German (Adidas) and christmas markets are just better across the border. The fact that i haven’t been to Berlin might be a little strange but it’s still on my To See list. The only thing i don’t really like is the German language, but hey, Dutch doesn’t sound that romantic either to foreigners.

When we were kids we used to go to Germany a lot as my dad worked for a German company, so maybe that’s were i developed my love of the country, or maybe it’s just because Dusseldorf and with that i mean mainly the Kö (Königsallee for those who are not familiar with Dusseldorf), oh so luxerious and reminds me of shopping at 5th avenue or Rodeo Drive in America. Or the fact that Germans still have high service and people still want to help you in the stores but not in a intrusive way.

So every once in a while i plan a day out to Dusseldorf and two weeks ago it was the first for this year. I have my favorite spots in this city and thought it might be fun to share it with you, so hereby my To Do/To See in Dusseldorf:

Parking: if you go by car put in Heinrich Heine Allee in your navigation, parking place Kunsthalle is very close to Altstad (from there you walk straight into the shopping area). The parking spaces are pretty small and if you have a problem with that they do have broader ones (which are pointed out by this pretty sexist sign, but hey for this time we’ll let it go).

If you walk out of the parking space, you will find a new shop on the left side. For those visiting Spain a lot, they probability know it: Cuplé (Neustrasse 6, Altstad, Dusseldorf). It was the first time i walk in and fell in love instantly. Beautiful leather shoes and bags in the cutest colors. Gorgeous dresses and tops and besides that also lots of cute jewelry and accesories. A recommendation if you are looking for a one of a kind piece as she only has a few and can’t order more of the collection. My mum bought the cutest bracelet and i was so dumb to wanna think about that beautiful necklace a little longer, as when we came back after shopping all day the store was unfortunately already closed.

Ussually i start my day in Dusseldorf at the German backery for a delicious pretzel or German bun or i go straight to Starbucks. A few years ago there was one at the Kö and it was really my favorite spot for a coffee on the second floor and to watch all the people go by. Unfortunately they changed it into a Chanel store, but luckly there is one in Altstad that is almost as fun. (around the corner there are two restaurants i will mention later.

Shopping:

My favorite German clothing store is Kult and is situated right across this Starbucks in Altstad but this one is a little chaotic, so i ussually choose to go to the one at the Kö. They have different brand like Adidas, Calvin Klein, Love Moschino but also very affordable ones (sometimes you can score something so cute for just € 10). The mix of affordable and expensive is what i love about this store, just like that funky decorations in the store (giant unicorns or bulldogs).

Prefer a little more low budget, my mum loves Promod (and this time i bought the cutest flamingo sweater for just €35,- and they had very cute dresses aswell). However the collection changes a lot. This time we liked it a lot but last time we couldn’t find anything fun. Across from Promod you will find Gina Tricot, which is ideal for accessoires like stocking, socks or cute necklaces.

Walk a few more door down and you’ll find the browbar of Benefit, just those colors want to make you go in. In America i let them do my brows and now i can’t hardly go without Gimme Brow. Not cheap but the perfect way to make my light eyebrows look a lot fuller without having to paint them. A few doors down is Lush, which i can’t resist. I know we have this in Holland but not really close by my town, so when in Dusseldorf i sometimes go in for a golden bath bomb (my favorite as it feels so luxerious).

Ofcourse there are a lot more cute stores in Altstad but these are a few of my favorites. And ofcourse the ussual suspect you find in every big city in The Netherlands like Zara, Mango, H&M, Hunkemoller are situated here aswell, but they sometimes do have another collection, so if you are a fan of one of those it might pay off to make a little stop at them while you are around. However i was really sad to found out Dunkin’ Donuts just like the Adidas Neo store was no longer there:( ! But this might be better for my waistline and wallet ;)!!!

After visiting all my favorites in Altstad i ussually cross the Henrich Heine Allee to the Kö (denk Rodeo Drive/5th Avenue). First you pass the Breidenbacher Hof hotel, which is still at my To-Sleep list and than esspecially around Christmas time as the hall looks absolutely breathtaking when decorated. (but i guess i have to win the lotery for that). A few doors further is Michael Kors, my favorite brand and yes also this time i fell in love with a bag but i could restrain myself and put it on my wishlist (a list of things to save for).

And when you cross the bridge you can spot all the beautiful stores already, from Tiffany’s to Chanel and  Gucci. All beautiful and fun to window shop or even go in (don’t feel intimidated by the guards at the door, the personnel is ussually very friendly even if you don’t buy anything).

Luckly there are also some affordable shops in this street (Königsallee) like Zara Home and Riviera Maison. And there are two malls, one that is more a big Saturn but has a really nice foodcourt on the lower level. And than there is the Kö galerie, where they have my favorite drugstore on the lower level, DM and a Rewe, a bit of a upscale supermarket, and for those that read my guilty pleasures know that that makes me really happy. What also makes me happy is the art gallery upstairs (Mensing Galerie). I don’t know much about art, but i do know that Pop Art ussually brings a smile to my face. And this galery is filled with it (think Britto, James Rizzo). They once had a picture of Marilyn Monroe completely made out of gummibears of Haribo. And just now i saw enough things that i would love in my house… but for now it’s a just a dream…untill i win that lottery.

If you don’t go directly on to the Kö but go straigh after crossing the bridge (and pass Miu Miu) there is another mall, the Shadow Arcade. A mall with my favorite interior shop, Habitat. Fun for the foodbloggers among us, as they have very nice plates, glasses and other stuff to brighten up your food photo’s. This mall also has a foodcourt on the lower level with delicious sushi, a mexican restaurant and a new healthy juice/smoothie bar, which we obviously needed to test. My mum took a vanilla smoothie (vanilla yoghurt, strawberry, mango and banana) and i went for a Sweet Honey (strawberry, banana, honey, oj & frozen yoghurt). Both tasted really good. But you could also choose Green smoothies, frozen yoghurt or salads. Ofcourse you can choose to have a quick bite her. But if you love Italian food you have to get back to Altstad, as at the Wallstrasse (around the corner of the Starbucks) are two of my favorite  restaurants in Dusseldorf situated. By coincidence they are both Italian.  One is a bit fancier and expensiver but oh so delicious and worth it, A Tavola and serves real Italian dishes but don’t expect pizza’s on the menu. The olive oil is a specialty which you can enjoy while waiting for your food with delicious bread. However this time we felt more like sharing a pizza so we went to their neighboors (a few doors further), La Candeletta. The interior isn’t really pretty but it makes up for it with delicious food. One of the best pizza’s i ever had with a super thin crust, which made us come back for the 3rd time. This time we also shared a Vitella tonato and caprese salad and spend approximately €35 for the two of us, including a bottle of my favorite water, San Pellegrino.

Curious?, the best time to visit Dusseldorf is in summer, as after work a lot of people go out for drinks and the terraces and beer tables are completely crowded which makes it a fun place to be or go around Christmas time (November/December) as the city is filled with several christmas markets and the whole place looks magical with the tiny lights, beautiful windows of the stores and cute christmas stands.

Wanna stay for a night on a budget: Hotel an der Oper is in Altstad so you walk right into the cozy shop & party area (and next to the Kunsthalle parking place, so you don’t have to drag your suitcase very far) or look online for an offer for the Leonardo Royal Hotel at the end of the Königsallee (with a pool to relax after a day of shopping).
