Het leuke van deze “afscheidstournee” door Nederland is dat ik zo ook qualitytime heb met de mensen die ik lief vind. Helemaal leuk als diegene de stad ook nog eens heel goed kent omdat ze er is opgegroeid en je alle leuke straatjes en plekjes kan laten zien. Ik vond Utrecht altijd al superleuk, maar nu nog leuker. Welke plekjes je niet mag overslaan als je hier bent (okay, eentje misschien wel, al is het wel super instagramable, dus nee, niet gekozen door die vriendin, maar had mij laten “influencen” ;)!!!):

Coffee, tea…me? Uh, i mean cake!
Black Brew: Retro maar in een no-nonsense manier…dit fijne plekje serveert heerlijke koffietjes en de carrot cake is ook een aanrader!
Toetje: op een zomerse dag is het heerlijk mensen kijken vanaf het kleine maar fijne terrasje met een goede Latte of zelfgemaakte ijsthee. De cake sloegen wij even over (want nog vol van het ontbijt) maar de cheesecakes zagen er echt heerlijk uit. Oh en het interieur van dit schattige kleine koffietentje langs de gracht is ook nog eens heel fijn!
Luca IJssalon: we kwamen langs deze ijssalon onderweg naar The Streetfood Club en ik had al bedacht dat ik misschien toch liever hier mijn toetje wou eten. De rij voor de deur beloofde al veel goeds en dat maakte ze ook waar. Heerlijke smaken, lekker romig en veel keuze. Oh en je kunt van de smaken ook een milkshake laten mixen. Okay, geen koffie & cake plekje (al kun je er volgens mij wel koffie krijgen), maar ik vond dit zeker een vermelding waard!

Leukste Lunchplekjes:
Kimmade: we liepen een leuk straatje in en mijn vriendin wees me op een Vietnamees eettentje waar een rij stond. Dat kan alleen maar goed zijn…Dus ja het is even wachten voor je iets hebt, maar dan heb je ook echt een van de heerlijkste broodjes Bánh mì die ik ooit heb gegeten. De noodles van mijn vriendin zagen er ook goed uit en de summerrolls zijn ook zeker een aanrader.
Anna Pancakes: het lekkers wat uit dit inniminie keukentje komt, is het wachten waard. Want op zondagochtend is het hier superdruk en heb je geluk als je een plaatsje veroverd in dit te schattige tentje. De pancakes worden all day gebakken dus perfect voor brunch maar als je liever een koffie-tje doet met een lekker taartje of een bagel, dan kun je hier ook prima terecht.

To do:
Eerlijk, er is zoveel wat je kunt doen in Utrecht. Denk aan suppen of een rondvaart door de grachten, de Dom beklimmen of er onder met DOMunder, 1 van de vele museums bezoeken (leuk met kleine kinderen is het Nijntje Museum). Maar eigenlijk vonden we het heerlijk om gewoon lekker te slenteren langs de grachten en door de leukste straatjes. En met iemand die het kent is dat nog leuker:
Voorstraat: zo liepen we namelijk ietsjes verder naar de Voorstraat en dat moet toch wel de leukste straat van Utrecht zijn. Vol met leuke boutique-jes, eettentjes en andere schattige winkeltjes. En de vibe is zo fijn, hier moet je echt naar toe!
Hoog Catharijne: als ik dit 10 jaar geleden had geschreven was dit absoluut niet op dit lijstje gekomen. Maar wow, wat een transformatie heeft dit winkelcentrum ondergaan. Van oude zooi waar je na je de trein uitkomt, zo snel mogelijk een weg door baande, naar het centrum naar een modern, bijna Amerikaans aanvoelend, “mall”. Strak ingericht met de fijnste winkels, zoals Lush, Sissy Boy, H&M en Zara Home. Maar ook budget winkels zoals Action en Zeeman kun je hier vinden. Het is dat het centrum van Utrecht superleuk is maar anders zou ik hier wel een hele middag kunnen vullen. Als ik weer eens de trein in stap, zorg ik zeker voor een iets langere tussenstop in Utrecht! Al is het maar om iets lekkers te halen bij Cinnabon of Madame Cocos en een bathbomb bij Lush!

Staying for dinner?
The Streetfood Club: hou je van Instragrammable plekjes dan ben je hier zeker aan het goede adres. Van hysterisch behang, tot een groene oase en natuurlijk het befaamde Life’s a Bitch foto momentje. En ja, de cocktails zien er ook echt prachtig uit en het eten is zeker een fotootje waard. Hou je echter van heel lekker eten, dan moet ik heel eerlijk bekennen, er zijn echt vele lekkerdere plekjes in Utrecht die niet zo gehyped worden. De eerste twee gerechtjes die we kozen (ba0 buns en gyoza’s) beloofde veel goeds, echter alles wat er na kwam was het gewoon net niet, met als dieptepunt de empanadas. Nu komt dit laatste misschien omdat ik regelmatig in Zuid-Amerika kom en dus weet hoe een empanada hoort te smaken, dus wellicht ben ik extra kritisch. Maar sorry, hij kwam niet eens in de buurt van de real deal! Leuk om een keer te zijn geweest om te zien waar heel (foodie) Instagram het over heeft of voor een cocktailtje & bites voor een avondje stappen, maar voor mij zeker geen restaurant waar ik nog eens terug zou komen! Overigens wel redelijk budgetproof, we waren met zijn tweeën €60 kwijt inclusief drankjes (maar zonder toetje 😉 (zie Luca)!!!).
WT Urban Kitchen: heel wat anders dan de TSFC is WT Urban Kitchen, wooooowww wat was dit onwijs gaaf zeg. Gevestigd in een oude watertoren met prachtig uitzicht over Utrecht krijg je de mooiste en lekkerste gerechtjes na elkaar geserveerd. De heerlijkste smaakcombinaties die ik zelf nooit geproefd heb of bedacht kon hebben komen hier uit de open keuken (kersen gevuld met eendenlever bijvoorbeeld). Het personeel is misschien wel de jongste kitchencrew die ik ooit gezien heb, maar onderschat ze daarom zeker niet. Professioneel en met kennis van hun vak staan ze daar een show weg te geven in de keuken en aan tafel komen ze ook nog een gezellig praatje maken! Als je het aan kan geven bij de reservering vraag dan het tafeltje tegenover de keuken, als foodie is dit namelijk echt genieten. Of ga voor een plekje op de bovenste verdieping voor een mooie sunset!
LE:EN: we hadden nog wat time to kill voor we aanschoven bij WT Urban en hadden bedacht dat er vast wel een leuk koffietentje in de buurt zou zijn. Wat we vonden was nog veel beter dan dat. We plofte op de bank bij LE:EN en genoten van het eigenzinnige interieur en personeel wat een heerlijke feel good vibe gaf. LE:EN zit in een groot oude garage en behalve feel good vibes qua binnenkant kwamen die ook zeker uit de keuken. Helaas niet kunnen proeven, maar de Aziatische fusion hapjes die ik voorbij zag komen, maakte dat ik spijt had dat ik dit niet eerder had gevonden (als in…in plaats van de eerste op dit lijstje). Wel buiten het centrum maar zeker de moeite waard om even wat verder te rijden.

Voulez vous Coucher:
Cozy Pillow: ik was helaas te laat met boeken en greep mis, maar zoek je een leuke plek om te slapen midden in het centrum van Utrecht dan is dit echt een aanrader. Ook hebben ze een kamer aan de gracht. Heerlijk wakker worden aan het water.
Van der Valk Utrecht: maar gelukkig was er nog plek in mijn favoriete hotelketen. Ik rij hier zo vaak langs en vond het dan ook echt leuk om vanuit het zwembad op de bovenste verdieping het nu eens andersom te zien! Helaas werkte niet alle sauna’s naar behoren en was het behoorlijk druk, maar ‘s morgens vroeg had ik gelukkig meer geluk en was het een heerlijke start van de dag. Leuk detail is het scherm in de lift. De kamers en service vallen eigenlijk nooit tegen bij Van der Valk, wel zit het altijd iets buiten het centrum, maar deze is er maar 10 minuutjes vandaan met de auto.

Snack Souveniers:
Mario’s: je kan Utrecht niet verlaten zonder een broodje bij Mario’s te halen. Helaas waren ze net op vakantie maar er werd mij verteld dat dit echt een begrip is in Utrecht en elke Utrechter dit tentje kent. Misschien moet ik toch nog maar een keertje terug voor mijn vertrek! 😉

Blijkbaar zijn er ook koekjes van de Dom, Domtorentjes, maar daar kwam ik bij thuis komst pas achter en worden ze alleen bij Bakkerij Theo Blom verkocht (zien er overigens wel heerlijk uit, dus beetje jammer dat ik deze gemist heb) en er zijn ook nog Utrechtse boter spritsen en ook deze verkopen ze hier, net als Nijntje koekjes.

The best part of this “farewell tour” through The Netherlands is that i get to have qualitytime with the people i love. Even better if that person knows the city so well as she grew up there and knows all the cute streets and places. I always liked Utrecht, but i came to love it. Which places you can’t skip when you are here (okay, maybe one, eventhough it’s super instagrammable, so no, she didn’t choose it, i got “influenced” ;)!!!):

Black Brew: Retro but in a no nonsens way…this cozy place serves delicious coffees and the carrot cake is also a must eat!
Toetje: watching people go by on a Summer day from the small but cute terrace with a good latte or homemade ice tea is so nice. We skipped the cake (as we were still full from breakfast) but the cheesecakes looked delicious. Oh and the interior of this cute small coffee place across the canal is also very cute!
Luca IJssalon: we came passed this icecream shop on our way to The Streetfood Club and i already thought i might like my dessert from here. The line in front of the door promised something good and they delivered. Delicious flavours, very creamy and lots of choices. Oh and you can also mix the flavours into a milkshake. Okay, not a coffee & cake place (although i thought i saw coffee on the menu aswell), but definetely worth a mentioning!

Best Lunch places:
Kimmade: we walked into a cute alley and my friend pointed out a Vietnamese place with a big line. That must be good…So yes, it is a bit of a wait, but than you will have the most delicious Bánh mì i have ever had. The noodles my friend had looked really good too and the summerrolls are worth ordering.
Anna Pancakes: all the good stuff coming from the tiny kitchen, is worth the wait. As on Sunday morning it is super busy in this place and you are lucky if you score a table in this cute place. The pancakes are served all day, so perfect for brunch but if you prefer a coffee with a yummie cake or a bagel, you are also in the right spot.

To do:
Honestly, there is so much you can do in Utrecht. Like supping or a canal tour in a boat, climb the Dom or go Domunder, visit one of the many museums (fun with small kids is the Nijntje (Miffy) museum). But we actually just felt like strolling around the canals and through the cutest streets. And that’s even more fun with someone who knows the city:
Voorstraat: as we walked a little further out of the center to the Voorstraat and this must be the most fun street of Utrecht. Full of little fun boutiques, dinner places and other cute shops. And the vibe is so good, definetly a must visit!
Hoog Catharijne: if i had wrote this 10 years ago it would have definetely not be on this list. But wow, the transformation this shopping center under went is amazing. From old shit which you tried to leave as soon as you came of the train to get to the center to a modern, almost American feel, “mall”. Sleek design with the best shops, like Lush, Sissy Boy, H&M and Zara Home. And also budget shops like Action and Zeeman can be found here. If the center of Utrecht wasn’t that super fun, i could have spend a whole afternoon here. But next time i’m on a train, i will make sure to have a longer transfer time in Utrecht! Even if it’s just to get some goodies at Cinnabon or Madame Cocos and a bathbomb at Lush!

Staying for dinner?
The Streetfood Club: if you like Instragrammable places than this is the place to be. Hysterical wallpaper, a green oase and ofcourse the famous Life’s a Bitch photo moment. And yes, the cocktails also look great and the food is definetly worth a picture. If you like good food, i must honestly admit, there are so much more better places in Utrecht that are not being hyped as much. The first two dishes we choose (bao buns and gyozas) were a promising start but after that it all went down hill, with at the low point the empanadas. It might have something to do with spending time in South America and i know what an empanada should taste like, so i might be extra critical. But sorry, it didn’t even get close to the real deal! Fun to have visited and see what the hype on (foodie) Instagram is all about or to have a cocktail & bites before going out, but definetly not a restaurant to visit twice! Although it was very budget proof, we only spend €60 with two persons including drinks (but without dessert 😉 (see Luca)!!!).
WT Urban Kitchen: the complet opposite of the TSFC is WT Urban kitchen, as wooooow, this was so cool. The location of this restaurant is in an old water tower with a gorgeous view over Utrecht where they serve the most beautiful and delicious dishes. The most mouth watering flavour combinations i have never tasted or even could of think of come out of the open kitchen (for example cherries filled with duck liver). The kitchen crew might be the youngest i’ve ever seen, but do not underestimate them because of this. Proffesional and with knowlegde they are giving away a show in the kitchen and when they come to your table they are also in for fun conversations! If it’s possible when making reservations, ask for the table right next to the kitchen, as a foodie you will definetly love it. Or make reservations for the top flour for an amazing sunset!
LE:EN: we had some time to kill before WT Urban and thought there might be a cute coffee place nearby. What we found something even better than that. We chilled on the couch at LE:EN and enjoyed the quirky interior and personnel which gave off such a good feel vibe. LE:EN is situated in a big old garage and except for feel good vibes from the interior, they definetly also came out of the kitchen. Unfortunately we didn’t taste it but the Asian fusion dishes that came by, made me regret that i hadn’t found it earlier (as in…instead of the first one on this list). It’s a bit further outside the city center, but worth the drive.

Voulez vous Coucher:
Cozy Pillow: unfortunately, i was too late to book this place and missed out, but if you are looking for a fun cozy place to sleep in the middle of the city center of Utrecht, i definetly recommend it. They also have a room right on the canal. How nice is it to wake up next to the water.
Van der Valk Utrecht: luckly there is always place at my favorite hotel chain. I drive by here so many times and loved seeing the other side from the pool on the top floor! Unfortunately not all the sauna’s worked as they should and it was really busy in the afternoon, but early in the morning i was in better luck and it’s a great way to start the day. Fun detail is the screen in the elevator. The rooms and service never let me down at Van der Valk, it is however always situated just a little outside the city center, but this one is only 10 minutes away from it by car.

Snack Souveniers:
Mario’s: you can’t leave Utrecht without ordering a sandwich at Mario’s. Unfortunately they were on vacation but i’ve been told this is so well known amongs the locals and every one knows of it. Maybe i should return before leaving! 😉

Appearantly there are cookies of the Dom, Domtorentjes, but i only found out when i got home and they are only sold at Bakkerij Theo Blom (they do look delivious, so too bad i missed out on these) and he also sell Utrecht butter sprits (cookie), just like Miffy cookies.
