FUCK Middelburg! Sorry, hahaha ja ik als 15 jarige vond dit blijkbaar zo’n grappige uitspraak van Antonie Kamerling in De Kleine Blonde Dood, dat zodra ik iemand sindsdien Middelburg hoorde zeggen, dat ik in mijn hoofd altijd het woordje Fuck er voor dacht. Nou was ik er nog nooit geweest maar na dit tripje is het fuck wel uit mijn hoofd, want ohhh Middelburg, wat ben je leuk! Ik maakte dit schattige stadje samen met Laura (@lauras_super_vood) onveilig en kregen leuke tips, maar in twee dagen konden we ze niet allemaal doen. Welke wel…lees het hieronder:

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean cake!
Honey Pie: als je binnenkomt en je ogen gelijk naar de vitrine vol lekkers wordt getrokken, dan weet je dat je goed zit! De inrichting is ook nog eens heel erg gezellig en het personeel vriendelijk. Zeker een heerlijk plekje tegenover het water.
De Juf: ook hier werd ik gelijk aangetrokken tot al het lekkerst maar we hadden nog niet ontbeten, dus in plaats van iets zoet, gingen we allebei voor een heerlijke Egg Benedict. Ik nam daarbij de Notenthee, die een heerlijk kleurtje roze kleurt (very Instagramable), maar ook nog eens verrassend lekker was. Ook hier een hele fijne inrichting en je loopt vanaf hier zo het shopgebied in!

Leukste lunchplekjes:
Wooncafé Middelburg:dit plekje werd meerdere keren getipt en niet voor niks, hier hebben we echt heerlijk geluncht. Ook fijn hoe het personeel meedenkt om de keuze wat minder moeilijk te maken. Ik zat te twijfelen over een tosti of iets anders, toen ik dat hardop zei, kreeg ik gelijk te horen dat het geserveerd werd op foccacia brood…of dat de twijfel weg nam? En eerlijk gezegd, dat maakte de keuze een stuk makkelijker. Ik nam dus een tosti met brie, ananas, honing en walnoten (aanrader!) en Laura nam de Aziatisch Zalmtartaar die er ook heerlijk uitzag. En inderdaad, zoals een Insta volger al tipte, wordt je thee hier heel gezellig geserveerd!
De Gouden Bock: eigenlijk getipt voor avondeten maar we besloten er te gaan lunchen en dat was zeker geen verkeerde keuze. Als ik aan Middelburg denk, denk ik aan vis en bij De Gouden Bock kun je dan je geluk op. Ik besteld de vissalade en woooowww… ik kreeg gewoon een soort van mini Fruits de Mer met een oester, heerlijke garnalen, kokkels en meer en oh zo vers (en ook nog eens voor maar €17,50). Happy girl over here! Dat ook nog eens in het zonnetje op een fijn terras…de perfecte afsluiting van ons weekendje Middelburg!

To do:
Sjakie’s Chocolade Museum: 2 foodies die naar Middelburg gaan en dan het chocolade museum overslaan…dacht het niet! Museum klinkt een beetje te saai, ik zou het eerder een chocolade experience noemen. Grappig opgezet en bij het kopen van een kaartje krijg een doos met stukjes chocolade mee…hoe verder je het museum in loopt, hoe leger deze wordt. Je eindigt met een drankje en krijgt ook nog een verrassing waar je een deur verder voor moet! Oh en ondertussen leer je dus ook nog eens 1 en ander over chocolade! Mij hoor je niet klagen! 😉
Rondvaart Middelburg: op de website van rondvaart Middelburg kun je kiezen uit een rondvaart, kanoën of suppen. Na een workout met Laura in het hotel, besloten we heel wijs voor de rondvaart te kiezen vooral gezien de wind! Ik vind het altijd wel leuk om een stad vanaf het water te zien en met een zonnetje op het water te zijn. En onze schipper vertelde zo gepassioneerd over zijn stad dat ik zelfs nog een en ander heb onthouden. Vooral over de gevels, maar ook de leuke details van het kleinste steegje tot het smalste huisje (wat te koop staat, mocht je na deze blog Middelburg bezoeken en besluiten te blijven ;)!). Ook geeft het echtpaar de leukste tips, dus als je iets zoekt tijdens je bezoek, van hotel tot leuke lunch plek…vraag ze het. Ze delen het graag!
BMK Interieurs: okay, ik deel niet snel een winkel maar als je foodie bent en van mooi servies/glaswerk houdt of zoals wij het mooiste zoeken voor een foodpost, dan moet je gewoon hier naar toe. We hadden de afspraak maar 1 ding te kopen…Laura heeft ze daar aan gehouden..ik..hahaahaha..uhm…laat ik het zo zeggen dat ik 1 categorie heb geshopt! 😉

En ja…ook hier kun je de kerktoren beklimmen…we sloegen ‘m toch maar even over…genoeg stapjes gezet in deze 2 dagen!

Staying for dinner?
Café Cliché: deze tip kreeg ik van Anne van Anne_travel_foodie onder het mom van sterrenchef restaurant on a budget en als Anne zegt dat iets goed is, dan moet je haar dus gewoon geloven! Toen ik sterrenchef hoorde, had ik een mooie jurk en hakken in mijn koffer gegooid….hahaha voelde ik mezelf even zwaar overdressed toen ik een soort grand café binnen kwam lopen. Een beetje ongemakkelijk schoof ik mezelf op de kruk van de hoge tafel in het hoekje…maar al dit was vergeten toen het voorgerecht werd gebracht. WOW…meer kan ik er niet van maken…nouja wel maar wat ik ook zou zeggen, het zou de smaakexplosie niet goed kunnen beschrijven. En dit mocht ik dus nog een keer beleven met het hoofdgerecht van zeebaars. Ik zeg…ben je in Middelburg, zorg dat je hier gaat eten. Sidney Schutte, bekend van De Librije, is dus het briljante brein achter Cliché en ben ik even blij dat hij in Middelburg geboren is, zodat we van dit pareltje mochten genieten!
The Green Room: helaas moesten we allebei de volgende ochtend weer vroeg op anders waren we vast blijven eten en dan was de keuze niet heel moeilijk. Gevestigd in het Wood City hotel en met een gaaf concept waar groente de hoofdrol spelen met een ook nog eens een prachtige inrichting (stiekem gespiekt) lijkt me dit ook echt een hele bijzondere en lekkere beleving.

Voulez vous coucher:
Van der Valk Middelburg: need a break…sorry maar ik vind Van der Valk dan toch echt de fijnste. Vaak met wellness en gym en deze komt zelf met een zwembad (en bubbelbad). Ruime, mooi ingerichte kamers met heerlijke stortdouche en niet ver van het centrum (met de auto). En ja, de wellness is echt aan te raden, van cold room (let it snow, let it snow) tot 90 graden sauna. Enige nadeel: de wellness heeft andere openingstijden dan de gym en zwembad. Wel mag je in Middelburg na uitchecken nog de hele dag gebruik maken van de wellness maar helaas ging dat ons niet lukken. Wel nog even een goede workout eruit geknald en gelukkig hadden we de dag ervoor al heerlijk gerelaxt in de verschillende sauna’s! Ook fijn, toen ik zei dat ik voor een blog in Middelburg was, kreeg ik een map met informatie, plattegronden én een kortingsbon voor het chocolade museum (kijk daar houdt dit budget meisje van!).
Wood City Hotel: getipt door de lieve dame van de rondvaartboten, we moesten gewoon even een kijkje gaan nemen. En blij dat ik dit heb gedaan, wat een prachtig hotel in het centrum van Middelburg zeg! Alleen de inrichting van de entree al. Had ik dit geweten dan had ik hier misschien wel voor gekozen, met alles op loopafstand en dus dat fijne concept The Green Room erin gevestigd, waar je ook kunt ontbijten. Parkeren is niet bij het hotel maar op 50 meter afstand zit een parkeergarage waar je voor €18,50 per dag kan parkeren (na 20.00 uur en op zondag gratis). Heb je een elektrische auto dan kun je die wel gratis onder het hotel parkeren en opladen!

Snack souvenirs:
Zeeland is natuurlijk bekend om de Bolussen en Babbelaars maar na lang zoeken kwamen we toch ook nog iets echt Middelburgs tegen bij:
Sjakie’s Zeeuwse cadeauwinkel: zo vind je hier Middelburgse Koffie likeur en een Middelburgs Kruidenlikeurtje. En ook heel veel andere lekkernijen en echte Zeeuwse souveniers. Leuk om even rond te snuffelen en mocht je in het chocolade museum zijn geweest dan kun je met een bon en entreeticket hier gratis een milkshake of slush scoren.
Afdeling Snoepzaken: nee ze verkopen er niks Middelburgs maar hier MOET je even naar binnen…wat een snoepje van een winkel zeg. Roze, glitter en vol met…snoep! En ook nog eens in een heel schattig steegje!

FUCK Middelburg! Sorry, hahaha yes as a 15-year old i thought this was such a funny line of Antonie Kamerling in De Kleine Blonde Dood (Dutch movie), that ever since that moment if someone would mention Middelburg, i would always add Fuck inside my head before it. As i had never been but after this trip i must admit the fuck is out of my head now, as ohhh Middelburg, how cute are you! Laura (@lauras_super_vood) and i hit this cute town and got some fun tips, but not all was possible in only two days. Which we did do, you can read below:

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean cake!
Honey Pie: if you enter and your eyes get glued to the glass display case full of deliciousness, you know you are at the right place! The interior is also very cute and the personnel friendly. Definetly a delicious place across the water.
De Juf: here aswell i got attracted by all the delicious cakes but we hadn’t had breakfast yet, so instead of something sweet, we both went for an amazing Egg Benedict. I had Nuttea with it, that turns into a nice color or pink (very Instagramable), but was also surprisingly good. And yes also the interior is cute and you are close to the shopping area!

Best lunch spots:
Wooncafé Middelburg:i got the tip for this place a few times on Instagram, and they were correct, we had a delicious lunch here. I also like it when the personnel makes suggestions or help you choose. I was doubting between a grilled cheese and something else and when the waitress heard, she answered immediately that the grilled cheese came on foccacia bread…if that would affect my choice? And honestly it did. I went for the grilled cheese with brie, pineapple, honey and walnuts (loved it!) and Laura went for the Asian Salmon tartare which also looked really good. And as one Insta follower told me, they serve the tea in such a cute way.
De Gouden Bock: i exactly got this as dinner tip but we decided to go for lunch instead and it didn’t dissapoint. When i think of Middelburg i think of fish, and at De Gouden Bock you will get just that. I ordered the fish salad and woooo…i got a sort of mini Fruits de Mer instead with an oyster, delicious shrimps, clamps and everything was soo fresh. (and only €17,50). Happy girl over here! And that with sunshine on a beautiful terrace…the perfect way to finish our get-away in Middelburg!

To do:
Sjakie’s Chocolate Museum: 2 foodies that go to Middelburg and skip the chocolate musea…i don’t think so! Musea sound a bit too boring, i would rather call it a chocolate experience. Done in a fun way and when you buy an entrance ticket your receive a box with pieces of chocolate…the further you go into the musea the emptier it gets. You end with a drink and also get a surprise you get to pick up a few doors down! Oh and in the meanwhile you learn more about chocolate! You don’t hear me complain! 😉
Rondvaart Middelburg: on the website of the boattrip Middelburg you can choose a boattrip, canoeing or supping. After a workout with Laura in the hotel, we wisely decided to choose the boattour especially with the wind! I always love to see a city from the water and to be on the water when the sun is out. And our tourguide told full of passion about his city that i even remembered a few bits and pieces. Especially about the house fronts, but also fun little details of the smallest alley and house (which is for sale, so if you visit Middelburg after reading this blog and like it, you can stay ;)!). The couple also gives great tips, so if you are looking for something during your visit, like a hotel or lunch place…just ask. They love to share it with you!
BMK Interieurs: okay, i don’t share stores normally in this blogs but if you are a foodie and love tableware/glassware or like us look for the most beautiful things for a foodpost, you just have to go here. We had a deal to only buy 1 thing…Laura kept her end of the deal…me..haahahah..uhm…lets just say i bought things from the same category! 😉

And yes..you can also climb the church tower here…but we decided to skip it…we did enough steps in these 2 days!

Staying for dinner?
Café Cliché: i got this tip from Anne of Anne_travel_foodie like a Michelin chef restaurant on on a budget and if Anne says something is good, you just have to believe her! When i heard Michelin chef, i threw a nice dress and heels into my suitcase…haahha did i feel very overdressed when i walked into a sort of grand café. Feeling slightly a bit akward i placed myself on the barstool in the corner of the restaurant…but all of this was forgotten when i got the entree. WOW…i can’t make more of it…well i could but nothing would describe the flavour explosion and do it justice. And i got to experience it all over with the main of seabass. I’m telling you…if you are in Middelburg, make sure to eat here. Sidney Schutte, known from the Librije, is the brilliant brains behind Cliché and how lucky am i that he was born in Middelburg so we could enjoy this pearl!
The Green Room: unfortunately we both had to get up early the next day or else we would have stayed for dinner and the choice wouldn’t have been too hard. Situated in the Wood City Hotel and with an amazing concept in which veggies are the star and also with a lovely interior (i did a little sneak peek) this sounds like a special and delicious experience.

Voulez vous coucher:
Van der Valk Middelburg: need a break…sorry but than i have to go with Van der Valk. Often comes with a wellness and gym and this one even with a pool (and jacuzzi). Big and beautiful decorated room with a delicious rainshower and not far from the city center (by car). And yes i can totally recommend the wellness, with a cold room (let it snow, let it snow) and 90 degrees celcius sauna and more. Only disadvantage: the wellness opens later than the gym and pool. You do get to use the wellness the whole day after checkout in Middelburg but unfortunatly we didn’t have time. We did do a nice workout and fortunately we had already used the sauna’s the day before! Also nice, when i mentioned i was staying there for a blog about Middelburg, i got a folder filled with information, maps and a discount coupon for the chocolate musea (which i, as budget girl, loves!).
Wood City Hotel: tipped by the lovely lady of the boattrips, we had to go and have a look. Luckly i did, as this hotel in the city center of Middelburg is gorgeous! When you entered it, you already get a feel and it feels good. If had known, i might have chosen this instead, with everything in walking distance and the nice concept of The Green Room in it, were you can also have breakfast. You can’t park at the hotel but in about 50 meters there’s a parking place where you can park for €18,50 per day (after 20.00 and on Sundays for free). If you have an electric car you can park for free and load underneath the hotel!

Snack souvenirs:
Zeeland is ofcourse known for Bolussen and Babbelaars but after a long search we did find something Middelburgs at:
Sjakie’s Zeeuwse cadeauwinkel: where you can find Middelburg coffee liquer and a Middelburg herb liquer. And lots of other deliciousness and other Zeeuwse souvenirs. Cute to look around and if you have been to the chocolate musea you also get a free milkshake or slush with the coupon and entrance ticket.
Afdeling Snoepzaken: nope they don’t sell anything typical Middelburgs, but you HAVE to go in here…such a cute place. Pink, glitter and full of…candy! And also in the cuttest little alley!
