Lelystad…ik kon mij hier echt niks bij voorstellen en als ik een beetje ging googlen kwam ik vooral Bataviastad tegen dus was ik best nieuwsgierig naar deze provincie hoofdstad, maar de reacties op mijn oproepje voor de hotspots leverde zulke negatieve reacties op dat ik eigenlijk een beetje bang was wat ik aan zou treffen. Maar hey, ik was er nog nooit geweest dus misschien oordeelde ik wel te snel. Gelukkig kreeg ik ook wat leuke tips. En eerlijk is eerlijk, op het centrum na (Gemeente Lelystad doe er iets aan, mooie plantjes, bloemetjes…iets groens maakt het net wat gezelliger winkelen), heb je toch echt wel hele leuke plekjes. Hieronder wat favorietjes:

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean..cake!
Hajé Natuurpark: ik begon mijn tripje Lelystad met een superlekker taartje & latte bij Hajé in het prachtige natuurpark. Een heerlijk plekje om je route voor de wandeling door het park uit te stippelen onder het genot van een lekker kopje koffie of thee en iets lekkers of om na de wandeling bij te komen. Ook serveren ze een lunch en met mooi weer lijkt me het heerlijk op hun terras aan het water te vertoeven.
Konditorei Noor: dit werd mij door 3 personen getipt als place to be voor een lekker taartje. Omdat ik de ochtend al begonnen was met een taartje besloot ik netjes voor macarons en een heerlijke Red Velvet Latte Macchiato te gaan. In het hele grijze en saaie centrum van Lelystad is dit wel echt een lichtpuntje. Konditorei Noor is vernoemd naar haar dochter en ontstaan uit de jeugdherinnering van de konditoreien in het buitenland waar de eigenaresse (zie foto) verlekkerd voor de vitrines stond te kijken. En dat is dus precies wat bij mij gebeurde. Heerlijke taarten, homemade en met liefde! Ook leuk voor ontbijt of een high tea!
Chocolate Company Café: te vinden in Bataviastad en de perfecte plek om bij te komen na of tijdens het shoppen. Plof lekker neer op de fijne lange bank en geniet er net als mij van een Latte Karamel. En ja, daar krijg je dus ook nog eens heerlijke bonbon bij. Ze serveren ook lunch en die klinkt heerlijk maar eerlijk, ik zou hier echt gaan voor de Sweets op de kaart of neem dit lekker naar huis om nog even na te genieten van je shoptripje.

Leukste lunchplekjes:
De Rede: Als dit meerdere keren wordt getipt als leuk plekje om te lunchen dan moet het wel waar zijn. En ja hoor, niks gelogen. Dit was de tweede plek die ik bezocht op mijn eerste dag en werkelijk, ik snapte al die negatieve reacties over Lelystad niet. Gevestigd in een prachtig pand aan een boulevard met meerdere eettentjes (en uit betrouwbare bronnen, thanks Soraya ;)!, komen er nog meer fijne eetplekjes) is het hier toch echt wel heel fijn lunchen. En dit heeft niet alleen met het eten te maken (al kan ik je de Filet American aanbevelen) maar ook het lieve personeel dat je graag voorziet van meerdere tips en een gezellig praatje en de aankleding is ook echt prachtig. (zie foto’s) Zeker een bezoekje aan de Batavia Haven waard! Oh, en de menukaart voor het diner ziet er ook echt goed uit!
Aan ut Water: en ja hoor, nog zo’n prachtig plekje…het is dat ik het centrum inmiddels al had gezien, anders zou ik echt denken dat die Lelystadters een minderwaardigheid complex hadden. Want met uitzicht op alle zeilboten, met een groot terras aan het water, durf ik toch echt de zeggen dat een bezoekje Lelystad wel de moeite waard is. Begin ‘s ochtends met een heerlijk 10-uurtje (voor €10 en geloof me, deze Budgetbabe approves) met prachtig uitzicht, of geniet met mooi weer van het zonnetje op het grote terras. Ook leuk op een zomeravond want ja, ook hier kun je ‘s avonds dineren. (zie foto’s)
Banh Mi 101: leukste plekje om te lunchen in Bataviastad, nee dat misschien niet. Lekkerste, dat durf ik ook niet te zeggen, want er zijn zoveel eetplekjes, maar ik was op zoek naar iets anders dan een broodje of salade en de springrolls van Banh Mi 101 was precies de lichte lunch die ik na mijn 10-uurtje wel kon gebruiken. Heerlijk vers gemaakt met een sausje waar je maar in blijft dippen. Ik koos voor de garnalen springroll en de Chicken Lemongras en die laatste raad ik je echt aan. Ook serveren ze vers gemaakte sushi en natuurlijk Banh Mi broodjes.

To do:
Batavia stad: ja eerlijk is eerlijk, als je aan Lelystad denkt, dan denk je aan outlet center, Bataviastad en misschien ook wel de reden dat de binnenstad niet zo gezellig is om te winkelen. Want tja, als je zo’n mooi shopping gebied hebt dan snap ik dat je zelfs als Lelystadter hier liever je geld uitgeeft. Want ook nog eens fijne prijsjes, iets waar ik als Budget girl wel van hou! Ik kende outlets al van mijn tijd in Amerika en toen Bataviastad net opende was het zo’n teleurstelling, maar de afgelopen jaren is dat gelukkig veranderd. Mooie merken, groot aanbod, en de aankleding van de outlet maakt het winkelen wel heel fijn!
Natuurpark Lelystad: ik zag dit al op googlemaps en toen het ook nog aangeraden werd door de lieve receptioniste van het Leonardo hotel, wist ik dat dit mijn eerste stop zou zijn. En wat ben ik blij dat ik dat heb gedaan, okay het zonnetje werkte ook wel mee, maar mijn dag beginnen met een heerlijke wandeling door een prachtig natuurpark is zeker geen straf. Het park is mooi aangelegd en als je geluk hebt, zie je er ook nog heel veel wilde beesten van Bevers tot wilde zwijnen. Just for the record, ik dus NIET…hahaha okay, lichtelijk teleurgesteld wou ik het park verlaten maar toen werd ik toch nog verrast door een enorme Eland. Het park is heel toegankelijk en ook erg leuk met kinderen. Deze leren veel over de dieren die er te zien zijn en ze kunnen zelfs met een bootje het gebied verkennen. Parkeren/toegang: €3
De Hurkende man: even uitwaaien, dan is een wandeling naar de Hurkende man (ook wel bekend als de poepende man) wel heel fijn. Lekker langs het water en met uitzicht op dat immense kunstwerk!

Getipt werd ook nog Aviodrome (leuk voor kinderen), Toms Creek (voor visliefhebbers) en het nieuwe vliegveld (voor vliegtuigspotters).

Staying for dinner?
Steak van de Keizer: Als je op woensdagavond helemaal vol zit, dan is dat meestal wel een heel goed teken. En dat was het gelukkig ook. Ik koos voor dit restaurant omdat het naast het hotel zat maar na het online checken van de menukaart, ook zeker voor de gerechten. Uiteraard wint niemand het van een steak in Argentinië, maar voor Nederlandse begrippen serveren ze hier echt hele goede steaks. Perfect gegrild en gegaard zoals gevraagd (in mijn geval medium raw) en ik raad zeker de port saus erbij aan! Oh en nee, dit restaurant zit niet alleen zo vol omdat ie naast het hotel zit, want ik hoorde regelmatig begroetingen naar de eigenaar van vaste gasten en bij rondvraag bij Lelystadters kreeg ik ook echt vaak te horen dat je hier echt de beste steaks eet. (ja ik ben een echte speurneus als het om eten gaat ;)!).
Boerkok: helaas gesloten op de dagen dat ik in Lelystad was, maar als meerdere mensen het tippen, dan moet het wel goed zijn. En eerlijk, zo klinkt het ook wel hoor, als je de website bekijkt en de foto’s op Instagram. Een leuk plekje buiten het centrum.
Okay ik heb valsgespeeld, want de tweede avond ben ik op mijn terugreis stiekem gaan eten bij:
Madame Jeanette in…ja Almere! Deze stond al zo lang op mijn To Eat lijstje en nu was ik er zo dichtbij dat ik het niet kon weerstaan. En gelukkig maar, want het viel dus echt niet tegen. Dit Surinaamse restaurant is superleuk ingericht en het eten is superlekker. Oh en de serveersters zijn zo lief, zo wordt alleen eten echt geen straf. Nouja, wel een beetje want hun proeverij kun je alleen vanaf 2 personen bestellen. Dus next time, toch maar even een date regelen.

Voulez vous coucher:
Nou dat is in Lelystad Centrum niet zo moeilijk kiezen, ze hebben namelijk maar 1 hotel!
Leonardo Hotel Lelystad City Center: Centraal gelegen is dit wel echt een fijn hotel om te verblijven, ja, in het niet zo bruisende centrum maar wel met een parkeergarage tegenover en zodra je binnenkomt vergeet je het grijs om je heen, want de inrichting is echt heel nice. Nu wisten ze dat ik een blog kwam schrijven dus kreeg ik heel lief een upgrade van de kamer en een heel leuk welkomstpakketje wat echt perfect van pas kwam, met stadsplattegrond, een tourist guides en een heerlijk Flevosapje en de FlevoPost, was ik gelijk op de hoogte wat er allemaal gebeurde in deze toch best hele leuke stad! En ja ik voelde me wel een beetje een VIP. Ik hou van een persoonlijke touch en de lieve meiden van de receptie wisten dat ook echt te geven. Niet alleen door de upgrade maar ook heel behulpzaam en met leuke tips wat je nog meer kon doen in hun stad. Het hotel heeft trouwens ook een restaurant (wok) en uiteraard kun je er ook ontbijten. Van der Valk Lelystad: opent op 12 juli zijn deuren. Waar ik vroeger een beetje suffe saaie indruk had bij Van der Valk hotels is dat beeld wel veranderd nadat iemand mij hun hotel op de ZuidAs aanraadde. Niks appelmoes met kers, maar mega luxe kamers met hele fijne faciliteiten. En ook deze krijgt een wellness, fitness en zwembad. Oh en een skybar. Ik zeg, een tripje naar Lelystad wordt zo wel heel aantrekkelijk!
Onze kas: deze werd getipt voor zo wel slapen als eten. Helaas stond ik voor een gesloten deur (helaas stond dit niet op de website) maar trof ik wel twee Instagrammers op het terras waarvan er eentje zelfs 1 van de 4 kamers overnachtte. Dus daar maar even een impressie gevraagd en de foto’s die ze liet zien waren wel echt heel strak en mooi. En ze hebben een buitenzwembad lees ik op de site. Not bad toch! En je waantje echt wel een beetje op het platteland. Niet een heel slecht plekje om even de hectiek van bijv. de randstad te ontvluchten. Oh en de menukaart voor ontbijt, lunch of borrel ziet er ook veelbelovend uit!

Snack souvenirs:
Ja hahaha helaas pindakaas, geen lekkere koekjes, snoepjes of ander lekkers wat echt Lelystads is, maar na meerdere mensen lastig te hebben gevallen of Lelystad toch echt niet iets typisch had wat je alleen in hun stadje kon vinden, kreeg ik te horen dat ze wel een drankje hebben, namelijk Sproakwater. Ik heb echt mijn best gedaan om het te bemachtigen maar helaas was dat een soort van mission impossible. Maar mocht je het vinden, het blijkt een beetje weg te hebben van dropshots! (en aangezien ik daar vroeger redelijk vaak heel dronken van ben geworden is het misschien maar beter dat ik het niet kon vinden). Maar kleine oproep naar de bakkers in Lelystad…misschien een leuk koekje om Lelystad net nog wat dat extra’s te geven. Want eerlijk is eerlijk…jullie stadje is best wel heel erg leuk! Er zijn echt ergere plekjes om dood* gevonden te worden!

Lelystad…i really couldn’t imagine what to expect and when i googled it i only got hits for Bataviastad, so yeah, i was kinda curious about this provence capital, but the reactions when i asked for hotspots online came back so negative that i was really dreading of where i would end up. But hey, i never been there, so maybe i’m to quick to judge. Luckly, i also got some nice tips. And to be honest, except for the city center (Lelystad town government get your act together, nice plant, flowers…something green will make shopping there just a little nicer), it does have some really nice spots. Here are some of my favorites:

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean..cake!
Hajé Natuurpark: i started my trip to Lelystad with a very delicious pie & latte at Hajé in a gorgeous national park. A great place to plan your route for a walk trough the park while enjoying a nice cup of coffee or tea and something sweet or to rest after a long walk. They also serve lunch and when the weather allows it, their outside terrace on the water looks like a great place to relax.
Konditorei Noor: 3 persons told me that this was the place to be for delicious cake. But as i already had some in the morning i settled for some macarons and a delicious Red Velvet Latte Macchiato. In the very grey and boring city center of Lelystad this is definetly a delight. Konditorei Noor is named after her daughter and the owner (see photo) started it as a memory of her youth of the bakery’s in foreign countries where she would be eying the show case filled with cakes. And that’s exactly what happened to me. Delicious cakes, homemade and with love! Also nice for breakfast or a high tea.
Chocolate Company Café: you can find it in Bataviastad and the perfect place to take a break during or after shopping. Get comfortable on their nice long couch and enjoy a Latte Caramel just like me. And yes, they serve it with a delicious bonbon. They also serve lunch and it sounds delicious, but to be honest, i would really go for their sweets on the menu or take some home as a delicious reminder of your shopping trip.

Best lunch places:
De Rede: If this gets mentioned multiple times as a great place to lunch, it must be true. And yes, no lies here. This was the second place i visited on my first day, and honestly, i really didn’t understand all the negative reactions about Lelystad. Situated in an amazing building on a boulevard with more nice places to eat (and from reliable source, thanks Soraya ;)!, there is more to come), this really is a very nice place to go for lunch. And not just for the food (although i can recommend the Filet American) but also the sweet personnel that is keen to give you more tips of what to do in the city and just a nice chat and the place really looks stunning (see photos). Definetly worth a trip to Batavia Habour! Oh, and the menu for dinner looks really good too!
Aan ut Water: and yes, another gorgeous place…if i hadn’t seen the center just yet, i might have thought you Lelystadters had an inferiority complex issue. As with a view on the sail boats, a huge terrace on the water, i dare to say that a visit to Lelystad is really worth it. Start your morning with a 10 uurtje (hour) (for €10 and believe me, this budget babe approves) and an amazing view, or enjoy the weather and sunshine on there big terrace. Also fun on a summer night as yes, they also serve dinner. (see photos)
Banh Mi 101:
best place to lunch in Bataviastad, no maybe not. Most delicious place, also don’t dare to say that, as there are so many food places here, but i was looking for something other than a sandwich or a salad and the springrolls of Banh Mi 101 was exactly the light lunch i could use after a big breakfast. Made to order with a sauce i couldn’t stop dipping into. I choose the shrimp springroll and the Chicken Lemongras and the last one is definetly something i recommend. The also serve homemade and made to order sushi and ofcourse Banh Mi buns.

To do:
Batavia stad: honestly when you think of Lelystad, you think of theiroutlet center, Bataviastad and maybe also the reason why their city center is as nice to shop at. As well, when you have such a nice shopping area, i understand that as a local you much rather spend your money here. As the prices are also very nice, something this Budget girl loves! I knew outlets from my time in America and when Bataviastad just opened i was so dissapointed, but the last couple of years that changed. Nice brands, wide selection, and the look and feel of the outlet makes shopping even nicer!
Natuurpark Lelystad: i saw this on google maps and when it was also recommended by the sweet receptionist at the Leonardo hotel, i knew this would be my first stop. And i’m glad i did, okay the sunshine helped, but starting my day with a lovely walk through a gorgeous nature park is definetly not a bad start. The park is lay out in a very nice way and if you are lucky, there are a lot of wild animals to spot, from beavers to wild boars. Just for the record, i WASN’T, …hahaha okay, lightly dissapointed i was gonna leave the park, but on my way out i did get one surprise of a huge Elk. The park is very accessable and also fun with kids. They learn a lot of the animals in the park and they can even take a boat tour. Parking/entrance: €3
De Hurkende man (the sitting man): in need of taking a fresh breath, than taking a walk to see the Hurkende man (also known as the pooping man) is so nice. Along the water and with a view of this huge art installation!

I also got tips for Aviodrome (fun for kids), Toms Creek (for fishing lovers) and the new airport (for plane spotters).

Staying for dinner?
Steak van de Keizer: If you are fully booked on a Wednesday night, that is ussually a very good sign. And luckly it was. I choose this restaurant as it was next to the hotel but after checking the menu online, definetly also for their dishes. Ofcourse, nobody beats a steak in Argentina, but for Dutch standards they serve really good steaks. Perfectly grilled and cooked as requested (in my case, medium raw) and i definetly recommend the port sauce to go with it! And no, this restaurant isn’t fully booked as it’s the one next to the only hotel, as i heard guest great the owner the whole night as if it was an old friend and when asking locals i got to hear that they all go there for the best steak in town. (yes i’m like a detective when it comes to finding good food spots ;)!).
Boerkok: unfortunately closed on the days i was in Lelystad, but if i get tipped by multiple people, it must be good. And honestly, it looks like it when you visit the website or look at their Instagram posts. A nice place just outside the center.
Okay i cheated, as the second night on my way home i went for dinner at:
Madame Jeanette in…yes, Almere! This one was on my To Eat list for so long and now that i was this close i just couldn’t resist. And luckly, it didn’t dissapoint. This Suriname restaurant is decorated super cute and the food is amazing. Oh and the waitresses are so sweet, they make eating alone not a problem. Or well…maybe a little as their taste menu can only be ordered for 2 persons. So next time, i just have to fix a date.

Well it isn’t that hard to choose as Lelystad Center only has 1 hotel!
Leonardo Hotel Lelystad City Center: Central located this is really a nice place to stay, and yes, in the not so exciting center but with parking across the street and when you come in you will forget all the grayness as the interior looks really nice. They knew i came there to write this blog, so they upgraded my room, so sweet and gave me a welcome package that was right up my alley, with a map of the city, tourist guides and a delicious local juice and the local paper, that made me updated on everything that was going on in this unexpected nice city! And yes, i did kinda feel like a VIP. I love a personal touch and the sweet girls at the reception knew how to give it just that. Not just because of the upgrade but also by being very helpfull and with great ideas of what else i could visit in their city. The hotel also has a restaurant (Asian buffet style) and you can have breakfast aswell. (photos)
Van der Valk Lelystad: opens on July. I always had a very sad and boring impression of the Van der Valk hotels but that opinion has changed drastically when someone recommended me their hotel at ZuidAS. No apple sauce with a cherry on top, but mega luxerious rooms with very nice facilities. And this one also gets a wellness, fitness and a pool. Oh and a skybar. I say, a trip to Lelystad just got even more tempting!
Onze kas: this one was recommended for sleeping and dinner. Unfortunately i was met by a closed door (which they forgot to mention on the website) but i did meet two Instagrammers on the terrace and one of them stayed in one of the four rooms. So i asked for a little impression and the photos she showed were very nice of a modern room. And reading on their site, they also have an outdoor pool. Not bad right? And it feels like your in the countrysite. Not a bad place to hide from the chaotic life of, for example, Amsterdam. Oh and the menu card for breakfast, lunch and a bite also looked very promising!

Snack souvenirs:
Yup hahaha too bad, no delicious cookies, candy or other treats that represent Lelystad, but after harrasing multiple locals if they really didn’t have some kind of foodproduct that is typical for their city, i heard they do have a drink, named Sproakwater. I really did try to find it but unfortunately that was sort of a mission impossible. But if you can find it, it taste a little like dropshot (liquorice)! (and as i got drunk on those a lot when i was younger it may have been a good thing i didn’t find it). But a little shout out to all the bakers in Lelysatd…maybe a nice cookie will give Lelystad just a little extra. As honestly…your city is kinda really fun! And there are definetly worst places to be found dead!*
