Hoewel Fries voor mij zo goed als onverstaanbaar is, ben ik wel heel bekend met al het lekkers wat Friesland te bieden heeft. Voor een Fries suikerbrood, of Sukerbole zoals de Friezen het noemen, kun je me best wakker maken, hoor. Nu kom ik nog best wel eens in het Noorden, maar Leeuwarden bezoeken was er nog niet van gekomen. Dus ben ik blij dat ik deze blogs besloot te maken aan het begin van het jaar. Mijn peettante woont er om de hoek, dus dit was gelijk de perfecte manier om afscheid te nemen en samen gezellig Leeuwarden te ontdekken. En natuurlijk een plakje Sukerbole te eten…en meer….

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean cake!
Proefverlof: de lekkerste Oranjekoek die ik ooit at, at ik bij Proefverlof. Dit leuke tentje in de oude gevangenis van Leeuwarden is echt een aanrader (overigens de hele gevangenis, zie: To Do) en in de zomer zit je hier heerlijk op het terras aan het water. Proefverlof is nog nooit zo leuk geweest 😉 Ook leuk voor lunch maar beloof me dan wel de Oranjekoek te bestellen als toetje!

Leukste lunchplekjes:
Broodhuys: op het laatste moment werd mij deze tip nog toegezonden door een lieve volgster op Instagram en ze heeft helemaal gelijk. Wat een leuk plekje in hartje Leeuwarden. De inrichting is prachtig en de broodjes heerlijk. Oh en als je erna nog zin hebt in iets lekkers, het Fryske kofje compleet met suikerbrood likeur op de kaart klinkt echt heerlijk!
Sophias: kom je rond lunchtijd aan op station Leeuwarden, plof dan gelijk lekker neer bij Sophias. Prachtig ingericht, vriendelijk personeel en spannende gerechtjes op de kaart. Wij kwamen er eind van de middag voor een koffie en taart (de worteltaart is aanrader!) maar je kunt hier ook heerlijk even een cocktailtje met bites doen voor een avondje uit of dineren. En hoe leuk, in de zomer kan dit ook in de binnentuin waar ze allemaal gezellige vuurkorfjes hebben waar je omheen kunt zitten en vanaf 23 november toveren ze deze binnentuin om tot Kerstfestijn. Koop je kerstboom hier en warm op met een Glühwein rond een gezellig vuurtje…ik zou echt geen betere manier weten om in de kerstsfeer te komen.

To do:
De Blokhuispoort: mijn oom kwam mij deze tip en van mij mag hij voortaan zulke tips blijven geven, want hoe leuk is deze plek. Een oude gevangenis waar werkplekken, een bieb, een Goudsmit atelier, restaurants en de schattigste winkeltjes met hebben-dingetjes en zelfgemaakte cadeautjes te vinden zijn. Ook kun je een rondleiding krijgen van een oud cipier. In het cellenblok vind je in elke cel wel iets moois, zo kocht ik bij Waanzinnig Leuk! een mooi beschilderde Sneekse oester, die mee mag in mijn koffer. Nu heeft ze een webshop maar ik zou aanraden toch even naar het Noorden af te reizen en je kerst inkopen hier te doen en bij alle andere schattige cel-winkeltjes. Je krijgt geen spijt!
Shoppen in Leeuwarden: sowieso is winkelen in Leeuwarden echt een aanrader, wat een prachtige winkels. Ja ik was best verrast hoe hip het Noorden is, en het is dat ik maar 2 koffers meeneem, anders had ik zoveel moois geshopt. Van kleding tot interieur! Studio8 gevestigd in de oude bioscoop verkoopt beide en heeft echt zo’n feel good vibe en nog leuke verwijzingen naar wat het ooit was. Oh en je kan er ook prachtige Leeuwardse souvenirs kopen. Echt even binnen lopen!!! En vergeet niet de Kleine Kerkstraat, uitgeroepen tot leukste winkelstraat en dat snap ik helemaal!
Oldenhove: de toren van Pisa is er niks bij, wooooowww wat staat dat ding scheef. Maar leuk is ie wel en ja, te beklimmen, maar alleen in de zomer.
Obe by Tresoar: op het plein bij die scheve toren vind je Obe by Tresoar, het cultuur centrum van Friesland en, very on a budget, gratis te bezoeken. Van 1 september tot 15 januari vind je hier 20 verhalen van bekende en onbekende historische personen. En wordt een grappige parallel getrokken naar het heden! Leuk om even binnen te lopen!
Water: ieder jaar is het er weer op hopen, de Friese Elfstedentocht…zou het weer kunnen? De Willemskade is de start en finish voor deze barre tocht. En in elke 11 steden kun je fonteinen vinden om ‘m te herinneren. Maar uiteraard kun je ook in de zomer genieten van de grachten rond de stad. Huur een bootje of maak een rondvaart.

Staying for dinner?
Grand Café Post Plaza: prachtige hoge plafonds, mooie verlichting, hippe bar en gezellige hoekjes om te zitten, maar vooral heel erg lekker eten kun je bij Grand Café Post Plaza. Gevestigd in het oude postkantoor hoef je hier niet, zoals bij de PostNL, heel lang te wachten op verrassende bordjes met de lekkerste creaties. Ik ging voor de Nagelhout als voorgerecht en mijn tante nam de Ravioli en als hoofd voor de wilde eend waar heel leuk een geitenkaas crème brullee bij werd geserveerd (een ideetje wat ik ga jatten voor kerst ;)!) en mijn tante nam de gnocchi. Aangezien deze tripjes met mij bestaan uit veel eten, zaten we te vol voor een toetje. Maar thee met heerlijke Friandises was ook een mooie afsluiter. Oh, het Grand Cafe is overigens ook open voor ontbijt, lunch of voor een koffie/thee pauze met gebak.

Voulez vous Coucher:
Post Plaza: slapen doe je in het prachtige gerenoveerde oude postkantoor van Leeuwarden. Slapen kan of in het bankgebouw of in het postkantoor en de details zijn echt zo leuk. Veel van het oude is bewaard gebleven en/of in stijl toegevoegd. Van de postzegels als kamernummers tot oude ingelijste kaarten in de kamer. Een oude boel is het trouwens niet hoor, de kamer is van alle gemakken voorzien en heeft leuke speelse accenten, zoals prachtige lampen. De rainshower in de badkamer is echt mega en heerlijk om na een dagje shoppen onder te stappen of je dag mee te beginnen. Uiteraard is het ook nog eens superfijn om na het diner in het Grand Café maar een paar stappen en liftritje van je kamer te zijn. Om daar nog even heerlijk een kopje thee te nemen en nog wat na te kletsen of lekker tv te kijken. Oh en vergeet niet te ontbijten met de Friese wentelteefjes van suikerbrood…als je dacht dat suikerbrood zo al lekker was, dan ga je dit helemaal geweldig vinden!

Snack Souvenirs:
De Broadsjebakker: al dat Friese lekkers koop je in het leukste straatje van Leeuwarden bij de Broadsjebakker. Je wordt gewoon naar binnen getrokken door al het lekkers. Uiteraard sukerbole, maar ook de echt Leeuwardse Oldenhove koek kun je hier vinden. Oh en Fryske keatsballen, vergeet daar niet een doosje van mee te nemen mocht je de spelregels van Keatsen willen weten. Leuk detail: de zoon van de bakker staat op het doosje en is een ware Keats Pro.

Eventhough Frisian is to me almost like an foreign language, i am very known with all the deliciousness Friesland has to offer. I don’t mind waking up for some Frisian sugar loaf, or Sukerbole as the Frisians call it. I do visit the North some times but i still hadn’t been to Leeuwarden. So i’m glad i decided to make these blogs in the beginning of the year. My godmother lives close by. so it was the perfect way to say goodbye and discover Leeuwarden together. And ofcourse, to eat a slice of Sukerbole…and more..

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean cake!
Proefverlof: the best Oranjekoek i ever ate, i ate at Proefverlof. This cute place in the old jail of Leeuwarden is definetly a Must Go To (the whole jail by the way, see: To do) and in summertime the terrace on the water is a nice place to be. It has never been so much fun to go to jail ;)! Also fun for lunch but promise me to order the Oranjekoek as dessert!

Best lunch places
Broodhuys: last minute one of my sweet followers on Instragram shared this hotspot and she’s so right. Wat a lovely place in the middle of cute Leeuwarden. The interior is gorgeous and the sandwiches delicious. Oh and if you feel like something sweet to finish, the Fryske kofje complete with sugar loaf liquor on the menu sounds amazing!
Sophias: if you arrive on the trainstation of Leeuwarden around lunchtime, make your first stop Sophias. Beautiful decorated, friendly personnel and exciting dishes on the menu. We came in the afternoon for coffee and cake (i can recommend the carrotcake!) but you can also have cocktails and bites before going out or have dinner. And how fun, in the summer the garden is the place to be with little fire pits to sit around and from November 23 they turn the garden into a winter fair. Buy your Christmas tree here and warm up with Glühwein around the fire…i can’t think of a better way to get into the Christmas spirit.

To do:
The Blokhuispoort: my uncle gave us this tip and he can always give me tips from now on, as how fun is this place. An old jail in which there are workspaces, a library, a gold smith, restaurants and the cuttest shops with wanna haves and homemade gifts. You can also get a tour by an old prison guard. In the cell block you can find something cute in every cell, i bought at Waanzinnig Leuk! a gorgeously painted Sneeks oyster, which i will bring in my suitcase. She does have a webshop but i recommend going up North and do your christmas shopping here and all the other cell shops. You will not regret it!
Shopping in Leeuwarden: by the way, shopping in Leeuwarden is really recommended, such beautiful shops. Yes, i was definetly surprised how hip the North is, and it’s that i can only bring 2 suitcases, or else i would have shopped till i dropped. From clothes to Interior design. Studio8 which is established in the old cinema sells both and has that feel good vibe and cute references to what it once was. Oh and they sell cute souvenirs of Leeuwarden. Definetly a place you don’t want to miss! And don’t forget the Kleine Kerkstraat, named cutest shop street and i totally get it!
Oldenhove: the tower of Pisa got nothing on this…woooww…the thing is lop sided. But it is fun and yes, you can climb it, but only in the summer.
Obe by Tresoar: on the square with the leaning tower you find Obe by Tresoar, the cultural center of Friesland and very on a budget, free to visit. From september 1 to January 15 you will find 20 stories of known and unknown historic figures. And there’s a fun parallel to the present! Fun to have a little visit!
Water: every year it’s people are holding their breath, the Frisian Elf city ice skating tour on nature ice…is it on? The Willemskade is the start and finish for this difficult tour. And in every 11 cities you can fontains to memorate it. But ofcourse you can also enjoy the waters in summertime. Rent a boat or go on a canal cruise.

Staying for dinner?
Grand Café Post Plaza: beautiful high ceilings, gorgeous lightning, hip bar and cozy places to sit, but mostly very nice dinner is what Grand Café Post Plaza is all about. Established in an old post office, you don’t have to wait long for surprising plates with the flavourfull creations. I had the Nagelhout as starter and my aunt had the ravioli and as main the wild duck which was served with a goatcheese crème brullee (an idea i’m gonna steal for Christmas ;)!) and my aunt had the gnocchi. As these trips with me mean a lot of food, we were too full for dessert. But tea with sweets was also a nice way to end. Oh and the Grand Cafe is also open for breakfast, lunch or coffee/tea break with pastries.

Voulez vous Coucher:
Post Plaza: in Leeuwarden you sleep at this gorgeous renovated old post office. You can either sleep in the bank building or post office and the details are so cute. A lot of the old has been preserved and/or added in style. From the post stamps for roomnumbers to the old postcards that are framed in the rooms. Oh but don’t think it’s all old stuff, the room has all the modern facilities and fun playfull accents like the gorgeous lights. The rainshower in the bathroom is huge and so nice after a day of shopping or to start the day with. And ofcourse it’s so nice to eat at the Grand Cafe and only have to walk a few steps and elevator ride to your room. Where you can enjoy another cup of tea and talk or watch tv. Oh and don’t forget to have breakfast with French toast made of sugar loaf…if you thought sugar loaf was good as is, you will definetly love this!

De Broadsjebakker: all that delicious Frisian food can be bought in the cutest street of Leeuwarden at the Broadsjebakker. You just get pulled in by all that tasty food. Ofcourse sugar loaf, but also the real
