Ik heb wel eens gezegd dat ik niet verliefd wordt op mannen maar op steden. En Haarlem gaf mij zeker kriebels, wat een geweldige stad. Denk klein Amsterdam met grachtjes en bruggetjes, mooie oude huizen en grachtenpandjes, terrasjes, geweldige restaurants…maar dan zonder de overvloed aan toeristen en wietlucht. En ook deze stad heeft het beste van 2 werelden, want nog geen 15 minuutjes rijden naar mijn favoriete strand in Nederland…Bloemendaal! Wat met deze hitte echt perfect was voor een dagje bruin worden (waar ze in Haarlem trouwens een heel goed middeltje voor hebben, Haarlemmer Bruin ;)!) Waar ze nog meer goed in zijn kun je hieronder lezen waar ik je al mijn hotspots met je deel (met dank aan locals, oud-locals en IG volgers die altijd met fijne tips komen!):

Coffee, tea…me? Uh, i mean cake!
By Lima: ik begon mijn citytripje bij By Lima en volgens mij begonnen hier ook de eerste kriebels (en nee, niet om de knappe ober ;)!). Wat een leuk tentje zeg, Insta picture perfect met een bloemenwand en prachtige inrichting maar ook de menukaart staat vol heerlijke gerechtjes (ook voor lunch). Ik begon met een ontbijtje maar voor koffie en taart ben je hier ook op de juiste plek. Deze hotspot mag je echt niet missen als je in Haarlem bent!
Mogador: gevestigd op de gezellige Botermarkt is dit plekje een must-go als je vegan bent. Nou ben ik niet vegan, maar de roze vegan koek is ook voor non vegans echt een aanrader. Jeugdsentiment maar dan een gezondere, zonder enge toevoegingen, en 10x zo lekkere versie. De rest van de taartjes zagen er trouwens ook echt goed uit. En de lichte inrichting met prachtige foto’s aan de muur maakt dit ook echt een heel fijn plekje voor een kleine koffie pauze.
Bij Babette: lopend door de leuke straatjes van Haarlem, werd mijn aandacht getrokken door dit leuke oude pandje met heerlijke taarten in de etalage. Helaas zat ik al vol maar toch liep ik even naar binnen en blij dat ik dit heb gedaan. Want oh wat een schattig zaakje en een aanrader als je op zoek bent naar het perfecte plekje voor een babyshower, vrijgezellefeestje of gewoon zomaar een Afternoon Tea. Alles is homemade en de details van de inrichting tot het outfit van het meisje wat er werkte, kloppen gewoon!

Leukste lunchplekjes:
Kleine disclaimer, hoe hoger de temperatuur des te lager mijn eetlust, dus in de 3 dagen dat ik in Haarlem was heb ik niet geluncht. Echter, wel heerlijke ontbijtjes op en de menukaarten van onderstaande plekjes bekeken en de lunch gerechten klonken ook heel goed.
YB by Yoghurt Barn: zoals gezegd heb ik hier heerlijk ontbeten met natuurlijk een yoghurtje. Nu stond er een Fabulous Fig op het menu en dat is natuurlijk qua naam op mijn lijf geschreven, maarrrr ik ging toch voor de Made in Heaven want die ingrediënten (o.a. caramel zeezout en oreo) is toch meer me. Overigens zagen de broodjes & wrap op het menu er ook lekker uit en kun je hier ook terecht voor een high tea. En naast al dat lekkers, zit deze Yoghurt Barn in een heel mooi pand met fijn interieur.
Frenchie restaurant: hier kun je dus echt dag & nacht terecht van ontbijt tot slapen want ze hebben ook echt prachtige kamers boven (hierover meer onder het kopje Voulez Vous Coucher). En ja, dus ook voor lunch. Het ontbijt (de French Toast) was al echt heerlijk dus ik kan me alleen maar voorstellen dat dit ook voor de lunch geldt. Daarnaast wordt je verliefd op de mooie inrichting in dit oude pand, maar zit je ook heerlijk op het terras. Een aanrader! Oh en die heerlijke Strawberry French Toast kun je dus ook gewoon als lunch nemen want ze serveren ontbijt tot 16.00 uur, dus ook heerlijk op een lazy Sunday na een avondje stappen. En misschien kom ik nog wel terug voor lunch als de temperatuur iets lager is, voor de Toast Cannibale Furikake want die klinkt echt te lekker!
Stach: ik ben dus stiekem een beetje jaloers op elke stad die een Stach heeft, dus ja, ook op Haarlem. Deze zit op het hoekje van de Botermarkt en je kunt natuurlijk broodjes meenemen maar er ook heerlijk op de bank ploffen.

To Do:
De Adriaan Molen: ja we weten nu wel dat er in elke provincie hoofdstad wel een kerktoren te beklimmen is, dus vast ook in Haarlem. Maar een molen beklimmen, dat klinkt en is dus echt veel leuker!!! En hoe Hollands wil je het hebben. Ik was net op tijd op het te leuke soort eilandje waar de molen staat om nog mee te kunnen met de tour van de molenaar. Nu was het ergens ook een beetje gênant dat ik tegen de Italianen in de tour moet zeggen dat je als Nederlander nog nooit in een molen bent geweest. Dus ben blij dit nog even gedaan te hebben voor ik Nederland ga verlaten. Nu is deze molen ook wel echt heel leuk want het uitzicht op 12 meter hoogte is echt prachtig, je kijkt van alle kanten over Haarlem. En de molenaar vertelt zo vol passie over de geschiedenis maar ook over zijn werk in de molen. En vanaf nu let ik dus echt op de stand van de wieken bij elke molen die ik zie, want elke stand heeft een betekenis..zowel vrolijke als verdrietige. Een tour van de molen kost €5,- en in de zomer op maandag t/m vrijdag van 13.00 tot 17.00, in het weekend van 10.30 tot 17.00 uur te boeken.
Club Spaarne Bootverhuur: Jaloers zat ik te kijken naar alle mensen die heerlijk in een bootje door de grachten en over de Spaarne vaarde, maar om nu alleen aan het roer te zitten vond ik toch een beetje gek (en ik weet niet hoe goed mijn vaarvaardigheden zijn). Toen ik echter er achter kwam dat de brug niet meer open ging die naar de molen gaat, vroeg ik bij de lieve dame van de bootjesverhuur hoe je dan aan de overkant kan komen. Zonder lang na te denken zei ze, stap maar bij hem in het bootje. Dus toch nog in een bootje gezeten voor een lift naar de molen en natuurlijk beloofd dat ik ze ervoor in ruil zou noemen in mijn blog. Maar eerlijk, de bootjes zijn ook superleuk en als ik ergens een bootje zou huren, dan zou het hier zijn. Maar dan met een grote mand vol lekkers en een hele middag (oh en misschien een leuke ervaren schipper ;), al heb je geen vaarbewijs nodig!). Je vind Club Spaarne bootverhuur naast de Catharijnebrug.
De Vishal: uiteraard is het Frans Hals museum heel bekend in Haarlem met 2 locaties. Maar naast een van deze locaties, op de Grote Markt, is ook een ander mooi plekje waar je kunst gratis kunt bewonderen. Aan de kerk vast vindt je de Vishal waar het hele jaar door wisselende exposities worden gehouden. Echt een aanrader om even binnen te stappen tijdens je bezoek aan de Grote Markt, al is het voor gebouwtje zelf met het glazen dak waardoor je een mooi doorkijkje krijgt naar de kerk. En ja, het Frans Hals museum sloeg ik even over, de hitte maakte het dat ik liever iets eerder naar mijn hotel ging om even te relaxen in de wellness. En had in Den Haag mijn portie oude meesters al gehad ;)!
Bloemendaal: vroeger was dit dus echt mijn plekje aan zee en kon je mij er vaak vinden. Zandvoort is in de zomer vaak te druk, net als Scheveningen, maar Bloemendaal is net goed, al hebben inmiddels meer mensen dit plekje ontdekt. Alleen al de rit er naar toe vanuit Haarlem maakt mij al helemaal vrolijk en geeft echt zo’n vakantiegevoel als het zonnetje schijnt (en dat deed het volop afgelopen dinsdag). Mijn favoriete strandtent Vroeger heet tegenwoordig Later…maar het is er nog steeds lekker vertoeven. Ik moest heel even over het kleine beetje Bloemendaalse arrogantie heen stappen (10 minuten laten wachten op een bedje omdat “zogenaamd” alles gereserveerd was en dan een beetje hooghartig vragen of je wel weet hoe duur een bedje kost, iets wat ik niet gewend was van Vroeger en juist die nuchterheid was waarom ik liever daar lag. Maar goed, uiteindelijk wel gewoon op dat bedje neergeploft om er vervolgens zeker 5 uur niet meer af te komen. En gelukkig komt dat “dure” bedje wel met een fijne service. Uiteraard kun je ook gewoon kiezen om zelf een handdoekje en parasol mee te nemen (budget style) en afkoelen in de zee is natuurlijk helemaal gratis. (let wel op voor de stromingen, gelukkig geeft een bord bij het betreden van het strand aan hoe de stroming is op dat moment). Parkeren doe je bovenaan bij de overdekte parkeerplaatsen (iets wat 20 jaar geleden ook nog niet was en zoveel fijner is als je aan het eind van de dag in je auto stapt). Ik betaalde €23,22 (parkmobile) voor zo’n 6,5 uur. Tip voor elke strandtent: wat wel heel chill zou zijn geweest, is een kluisje (onder je bedje bijvoorbeeld) voor je spullen als je tussendoor even naar de wc moet, een hapje wilt eten of af wil koelen in de zee en je alleen bent.

Staying for dinner?
Maita: deze werd getipt door een lieve volgster op Instagram en daar ben ik haar meer dan dankbaar voor…ik heb echt zo genoten. Maita is een Nikkei restaurant wat zoveel betekend als een combinatie van Peruaanse en Japanse gerechten, en laat ik nou van allebei fan zijn. Ceviche is iets wat ik in Argentinië heb leren eten en ik kan dan ook niet wachten om er daar volop van te genieten want in Nederland wordt het vaak een beetje aangepast aan de smaak van Nederlanders (lees: niet te pittig). Ik was dan ook zeer verrast dat Maita heel dicht bij de authentieke smaak blijft en alleen daarom raad ik je dit restaurant al aan. Oh en de Gyoza’s van kip in ponzu XO sauce zijn to die for. Ik zou er zo nog 2 porties van kunnen bestellen…maar heb mij netjes ingehouden. Daarnaast had ik nog heerlijke oesters en sushi dus mijn buikje was goed gevuld. Oh en het voordeel van alleen eten (behalve dat je niks hoeft te delen), meer oog voor details en de inrichting van het restaurant is ook echt prachtig. En het personeel is geweldig. Die kriebels werden na een avondje hier alleen nog maar groter. Haarlem, ik kom zeker terug en Maita is een grote reden hiervoor!
De Dakkas: verscholen op de bovenste verdieping van parkeergarage De Kamp vind je zo’n leuk initiatief. De Dakkas is een biologisch restaurant wat kookt met seizoengebonden producten. Fijn maar zeker zo lekker en met een prachtig uitzicht over de stad maakt dit een heel prettig plekje om te vertoeven in de zomer. Voor een drankje, lunch of zoals ik deed, diner. Ik ging voor een heerlijke burger met frietjes en een alcohol vrije cocktail. Oh en de vibe is zo fijn, festival lichtjes, picknick tafels, trapjes waar je lekker op kan hangen en er lopen zelfs kippetjes op het dak. Niet overslaan hoor, als je naar Haarlem gaat! 🙂
Later aan Zee: aangezien ik er toch al de hele middag op een bedje lag, dacht ik, laat ik er ook een hapje gaan eten. Helaas serveren ze alleen snacks op de bedjes en die zijn behalve dat de meeste warm zijn (bitterballen zijn niet echt mijn ding op een hete dag) ook nog eens redelijk ongezond (op de olijven na). Dus hield ik het bij flessen water en besloot ik na even afgekoeld te zijn in de zee, terug te komen om een heerlijke pokébowl te eten op het fijne terras met uitzicht op zee. En complimenten aan het lieve personeel op het terras die ondanks de drukte, personeelstekort en hitte, zo vriendelijk bleven en ervoor zorgde dat ik net als vroeger, dit toch wel het fijnste plekje blijf vinden op Bloemendaal.
Jopen kerk en Viqh: bij beide niet geweest, er zijn maar een bepaald aantal restaurants die je in 3 dagen kan bezoeken, helaas…(vooral als je door de hitte geen trek hebt), maar kreeg het meerdere keren als tip en eerlijk is eerlijk, ik ben niet zo van de alcohol, en al helemaal niet van bier. Maar ben je bierliefhebber, dan mag je de Jopenkerk met restaurant en bierbrouwerij in een oude kerk niet overslaan bij een bezoek aan Haarlem. Alle gerechten kun je combineren met de bieren die men er brouwt. Gek op wijn, dan is Viqh een aanrader. En volgens mij niet alleen om de wijn want als ik de inrichting zo zie is die ook echt de moeite waard en met 150 verschillende soorten wijn, zit er vast eentje tussen die je lekker vindt. Moeilijk kiezen, een proeverijtje biedt uitkomst.

Voulez Vous Coucher:
Van der Valk Haarlem: misschien hadden jullie het al door, maar ik ben dus best fan van Van der Valk. Waar het vroeger een duf zooitje was waar je bij het eten appelmoes met een kers kreeg, is het tegenwoordig hip, mooi opgeknapt én niet onbelangrijk veelal met een heerlijke wellness. Zo ook deze in Haarlem die er echt heel nieuw uitziet. Nu had ik aangegeven dat ik alleen kwam en ik lette blijkbaar niet zo goed op met reserveren maar eigenlijk zijn alle kamers tot nu toe echt geweldig geweest…behalve..ja deze. Ik kreeg dus echt een mini kamer met 1 persoonsbed en zo klein dat ik mijn kont niet kon keren. Gelukkig was dat met een telefoontje naar de receptie gelijk opgelost en kreeeg ik uiteindelijk een kamer bijna net zo groot als mijn appartement (nouja in ieder geval de helft) met een heerlijk bad, stortdouche, balkon en superlekker bed. En na 2 dagen werken was het echt heerlijk om even bij te komen in de Wellness met verschillende sauna’s. De gym stond ook nog op mijn programma maar koos uiteindelijk toch voor een bubbelbad s’ochtends. Wel even gespiekt en deze was echt heel uitgebreid. Parkeren is gratis en het hotel is met de auto maar 9 minuutjes van het centrum van Haarlem.
Hotel Frenchie: ik geloof dat ik wel zeker 5x heb gezegd dat ik best in Haarlem zou kunnen wonen (nee mijn emigratie plannen zijn niet gewijzigd hoor), zo leuk vind ik deze stad. En als ik dan ergens zou mogen kiezen om te wonen dan is het bij Frenchie. De kamer is echt zo mooi ingericht. Modern en klassiek, heel goed gemixt met leuke details en ook hier een heerlijke stortdouche (met heerlijke verzorgingsproducten). En dan het bed…ik had ‘s morgens echt moeite om eruit te komen, zo heerlijk lag het. Het was dat ik nog even snel een heerlijk ontbijtje wou eten beneden in het restaurant voor het tripje naar het strand. Daarnaast is de gang lekker funky met artwerk en grappige verlichting. Ze hebben 5 verschillende kamers met allemaal een eigen inrichting. Ik had kamer 3 aan de voorkant van het pand en vond het echt zo’n gave kamer en voorzien van een heerlijke airco was het goed vertoeven tijdens de warme nacht. Dus ja, ik ging wat eerder naar de kamer om nog even wat afleveringen van een serie te kijken op Netflix vanuit dat lekkere bed. Het hotel ligt in het centrum en om de hoek bij alle leuke plekjes. Je auto kun je parkeren bij parkeergarage Raak wat op nog geen 10 minuten lopen ligt. Nog een leuk detail, de persoonlijke touches in de kamer: een leuk handgeschreven kaartje, een persoonlijke informatie brief, een heerlijke room en face spray en een gratis fles Pellegrino. En…ik kreeg dus een kortingscode en ik mag die met jullie delen. Als je nog in 2022 in het hotel verblijft krijg je met code: ILOVEFRENCHIE22 10% korting op je verblijf (vul in op hun eigen website aan de rechterkant bovenin op het reserveringscherm). Ik zeg: DOEN!
The Niu Diary: gevestigd in een oude melkfabriek vind je dit moderne design hotel. Helaas kon ik er niet nog een nachtje aan vastplakken maar anders had ik hier ook zeker een kamer geboekt na het zien van de foto’s op de website. Getipt door het meisje wat ook Maita tipte, dus het kan alleen maar goed zijn! 🙂 Oh en om de hoek bij Patronaat, dus mocht je daar een feestje hebben dan kun je rollend naar je hotelkamer.

Snack souveniers:
Helaas, ook hier geen typische Haarlemse snacks…maar wel drank. Uiteraard Jopenbier wat je natuurlijk het beste kan proeven in de Jopenkerk waar een restaurant zit en de brouwerij. Ook blijkt Haarlem aardig wat likeurtjes/sterke drank te hebben wat volgens de slijterij eigenaar bekender was dan Jopenbier…maar ik denk dat de echte Haarlemmer daar anders over denkt ;). Ik bedoel, ik kwam echt overal Jopenbier tegen, van de vrachtwagens tot op bijna elke drankenkaart waar ik kwam. Maar goed, een lekker snack voor bij die drank zou leuk zijn geweest.
Helaas dus niet een lekkernij om mee naar huis te nemen, maar voor de foodies onder ons, is het wel heel leuk om Van der Pigge te bezoeken. Dit kleine ouderwetse drogisterijtje verkoopt kruiden zonder toevoegingen. En ook hier kun je terecht voor Haarlemmerolie wat het beste helpt bij verkoudheid, griep, luchtwegproblemen, darmkwalen en andere lichamelijke ongemakken (met andere woorden, heb je ergens last van, slik dit dan als ik de oude bijsluiter moet geloven..ook leuk, het innemen is dagelijks enkele drupppels op een suikerklontje of vermengen met alcohol (mag vast ook in een Jopenbiertje ;)!!). Oh en ze verkopen Haarlemmer Bruin waardoor je dus megabruin schijnt te worden…ik heb maar gewoon gesmeerd met factor 50 maar nadat ik er over had gehoord zag ik het dus vaker voorbij komen. Misschien moet ik toch maar terug om zo wel de olie als het Bruin te kopen. Sowieso is het geen straf om rond te kijken in dit leuke oude winkeltje waar de tijd stil lijkt te hebben gestaan. Zeker de moeite waard voor een bezoekje. Ook leuk, van de molenaar hoorde ik dat het pand eigenlijk gesloopt zou worden omdat de V&D er een pand wou bouwen. Nu was de eigenaar het daar niet mee eens en eigenwijs als ie was, bleef hij zitten waar hij zat, en kon V&D de pot op, die dus uiteindelijk om het pand heen heeft gebouwd. Ook bezit het pand nog een echte oude gaper.

I once said i don’t fell in love with men but with cities. And Haarlem definetly gave me butterflies, what an amazing city. Think Small Amsterdam with it’s canals and bridges, beautiful old houses and canal houses, terraces, great restaurants…but without thousands of tourist and weed smell. And this city also has the best of both world, as only 15 minutes away by car is my favorite beach in The Netherlands…Bloemendaal! Which was perfect in this heatwave to get a tan in a day (and in Haarlem they have the best product for that, Haarlemmer Bruin ;)!). What else they are good in you can read below where i share all my hotspots (thanks to locals, ex locals and IG followers who always have the best tips!. Oh and if you are wondering, yes Harlem in New York City is named after this place.

By Lima: i started my citytrip at By Lima and i think those butterflies started here (and no, not because of the cute waiter ;)!). Wat a cute little place, Insta picture perfect with a flowerwall and gorgeous interior but also the menu card is full of delicious dishes (also for lunch). I started with breakfast but also for coffee and cake you are in the right place. This is a hotspot you can’t miss when you are in Haarlem!
Mogador: you can find this place at the cozy Botermarkt and a must-go if you’re vegan. I’m not, but the pink vegan cookie is also recommended for non vegans. Memories from my youth but than a healthier, without scary ingredients and a 10 times better version. The rest of the cakes also looked amazing. And the light interior with beautiful pictures on the wall make this the perfect place for a little coffee break.
Bij Babette: walking through the cute streets of Haarlem, this cute old building with delicious cakes in the window caught my eye. Too bad my stomach was already full but i did take a little peek inside and glad i did. As oh this is such a lovely place and if you are looking for the perfect spot for a babyshower, bachelorette party or just because you feel like an afternoon tea, this is the place to be. Everything is homemade and the details of the interior up to the outfit of the girl who worked there were spot on!

Leukste lunchplekjes:
Little disclaimer, the higher the temperature the lower my appetite, so in the 3 days i was in Haarlem i haven’t had lunch. However, i did have delicious breakfast and looked on the menus of the below mentioned places and the lunch dishes sounded pretty good too.
YB by Yoghurt Barn: like i said , i had a delicious breakfast here with ofcourse a yoghurt. There was a yoghurt called Fabulous Fig on the menu and that had me written all over me because of the name, but…i choose Made in Heaven instead as those ingredients (a.o. caramel seaasalt and oreo) are more me. The buns and wrap on the menu also looked really good and you can also come here for a high tea. And besides all that deliciousness, this Yoghurt Barn is situated in a very nice old building with a beautiful interior.
Frenchie restaurant: you can stay here literally day and night from breakfast till bedtime as they have gorgeous rooms upstairs (read more under the caption Voulez Vous Coucher). And yes, also for lunch. The breakfast (the French Toast) was really good so i can only imagine the same goes for lunch. Besides that you will fall in love with the gorgeous interior of this old building, but also the terrace is a nice place to sit. Definelty a recommendation! Oh and that delicious Strawberry French Toast is also available for lunch time as they serve breakfast untill 16.00 hours, which makes it perfect on a lazy Sunday after going out. And i migh come back for lunch when the temperatures are a little lower, as the Toast Cannibale Furikake sounds way too good!
Stach: i”m secretely a little jealous of every city that has a Stach, so yes, also on Haarlem. This one i situated on the corner of the Botermarkt and you can take a sandwich to go or have it on the cute couch.

To Do:
De Adriaan Molen: yes we now know that every main city has a church you can climb, so probability also in Haarlem. But climbing a windmill, that sounds and is so much more fun!!! And as Dutch as it gets. I was just on time on this cute little (sort of) island where the windmill is at to be part of a tour with the miller. I was a little embarrased to share with the Italians in the tour group that i, as a Dutchie, had never been in a windmill. So i’m glad i did this just before i’m leaving Holland for good. This windmill is extra fun as the view at 12 meters from the ground is gorgeous, you can look at Haarlem from all sides. And the miller told about the history but also about his job as a miller full of passion. And from now on i will check the blades of every windmill i see, as the way the stand has different meanings…fun ones but also sad ones. A tour of the windmill costs €5,- and can be booked in the summer from Monday till Friday from 13.00 to 17.00, and in the weekend from10.30 to 17.00 hour.
Club Spaarne Bootverhuur: i was watching with envy all the people coming by in boats on the canals and the Spaarne, but to rent a boat by myself felt a little bit crazy (and i’m not sure how good i can “drive” it). But when i found out that the bridge that went to the windmill couldn’t open any more, i asked the lady who rent out the boats how to get across without it. And without hesitation she said, jump on his boat. So i did get my boat trip afterall for a little “hitchhike” to the windmill and ofcoure i promised them a mention in this blog in return. But honestly, the boats are super fun and if i had to rent a boat somewhere i would definetly do it here. But than with a picnic basket full of food and the whole afternoon (oh and maybe with an experienced captain ;), eventhough you don’t need a license for these boats!). You can find Club Spaarne bootverhuur next to the Catharijne bridge.
De Vishal: naturelly the Frans Hals musea with it’s 2 locations is very famous in Haarlem. But next to one of these locations, on the Grote Markt, there is another beautiful spot where you can admire art for free. Next to the church you can find the Vishal which has different expositions throughout the year. I really recommend stepping inside when you visit the Grote Markt, even if it’s just for the building itself with the glass ceiling which gives a beautiful view on the church. And yes, i skipped the Frans Hals Musea, the heat made me go to my hotel early for a little relaxation in their wellness. And i had my share of old masters already in The Hague ;)!
Bloemendaal: this was my place where you could find me in my twenties. Zandvoort is really busy in Summer, just like Scheveningen, but Bloemendaal is just right, although in the meanwhile more people found out about that. Just the drive from Haarlem to the beach makes me all happy and gives that vacation vibe when the sun shines (and it did a lot last Tuesday). My favorite beachclub Vroeger is now called Later…but it’s still a nice place to hang out. I did have to swallow a bit of that Bloemendaals’ arrogance (letting you wait for 10 minutes on a sunbed as everything is “so-called” reserved and than get asked in a condescending way if you know how expensive the bed is, something i wasn’t used to from the past and was what made them stand out from the rest of the clubs as the were more down to earth. But oh well, i did in the end got my ass on that sunbed and stayed on it for at least 5 hours. And luckly that “expensive” sunbed does come with good service. Ofcourse, you are also free to bring your own towel and beach umbrella (budget style) and cooling down in the sea is still free. (Just make sure to watch the current, luckly a digital board at the entrance of the beach warns how the current is that moment). Parking is on top at the covered parking spaces (which was a nice change after 20 year and makes getting in your car at the end of a hot day so much better). I paid €23,22 (parkmobile) for about 6,5 hour. Tip for every beach club: it would be very chill if you had a safe (for example under your sunbed) for your stuff in case you need a toilet break, want to get some food or cool down in the sea and you’re alone.

Staying for dinner?
Maita: i got this tip from a sweet follower on Instagram and i’m more that grateful for it…i had the most amazing meal. Maita is a Nikkei restaurant which means as much as it’s a combination of the Peruvian and Japanese kitchn and i happen to be fan of both cuisines. I learned to eat ceviche in Argentina and i can’t wait to have it there often as here in The Netherlands they tend to make it more to our taste (read: less spicy). I was very surprised Maita stays very clos to it’s original flavours and just for that i recommend going here. Oh and the Gyoza’s of chicken in ponzu XO sauce are to die for. I would easily order 2 more portions…but i restraint myself. And i also had some delicious oysters and sushi so my stomach was already filled. Oh and the pre’s of eating alone (except not having to share), more eye for details and the interior of this place is absolutely beautiful. The personnel is also amazing. The butterflies got even bigger after a night here. Haarlem, i’m definetly coming back and Maita is a big reason for that!
De Dakkas: hidden on top of parking place De Kamp you can find such a cute initiative. The Dakkas is a organic restaurant which cooks with seasonal produce. Nice but even more so, delicious and with a beautiful view over the city, this is definetely a very nice place to hang out during summer. For drinks, lunch or as i di, dinner. I had an amazing burger with fries and an alcoholfree cocktail. Oh and the vibe is so goo, festival lights, picknick tables, stairs where you can sit on and there are even chickens walking around on the roof. Don’t miss out if you go to Haarlem! 🙂
Later aan Zee: as i was laying on their sunbed all afternoon anyways, i thought, lets have a bite to eat here aswell. Unfortunately they only serve snacks on the sunbeds and besides that these are mostly warm (bitterballs on a hot day just isn’t my thing) and most of them pretty unhealthy (except for the olives). so i just had bottles of water instead and decided to come back after cooling down in the sea for a delicious poké bowl on their nice terrace with ocean view. And compliments to the sweet personnel that, eventhough it was very busy, had a shortage of personnel and it was the hottest day of the year, stayed so friendly and made sure that just like the old days, this will stay my favorite place in Bloemendaal.
Jopen kerk and Vicq: i didn’t visit either of them, there are only a number of restaurants you can visit in 3 days unfortunately…(especially with a lack of appetite due to the heat), but i got these as a tip multiple times, and honestly, i’m not really into alcohol that much and especially not into beer. But if you do love beer, than you have to visit the Jopenchurch with a restaurant and brewery when visiting Haarlem. All dishes can be combined with the beers they make there. Craxy about wine, than i can recommend Viqh. And according to me, nog just because of the wine, as the interior looks worth a visit by itself and with over 150 different kind of wines, there will definetly be one you’ll like. Can’t decide, have a wine tasting.

Voulez Vous Coucher:
Van der Valk Haarlem: you may have guessed, but i’m pretty much a fan of Van der Valk. Back in the days it was boring and the place you got a cherry on top of your apple sauce, nowadays it’s hip, rennovated in the nicest way and not to forget, most of them have an amazing wellness. Also this one in Haarlem which looked brand new. Now i did mention i was staying there by myself and appearantly i didn’t check my reservation good enough as i ussually don’t as every room has been amazing upon this point…well…hahahah not this one. I got a tiny room with a single bed and it’s was so small i couldn’t move my butt in there. Luckly one phonecall to the reception solved that problem and i ended up staying in a room as big as my appartment (well atleast half of it) with a delicious bath, rainshower, balcony and big nice bed. And after 2 days of work it felt so good to relax in their wellness with multiple sauna’s. The gym was also in my schedule but in the end i choose to relax in a bubble bath in the morning instead. I did have a peek and it was big and had lots of equipment. Parking is free and the hotel is only 9 minutes away by car from the city center of Haarlem.
Hotel Frenchie: i think i might have mentioned about 5 times that i could eaily live in Haarlem (no my emigration plans haven’t changed), that’s how much i love this city. And if so, i know just the place i want to move into, Frenchie. The room is so cute and nicely decorated. Modern and classic, mixed it a great way with cute little details and also here a delicious rainshower (with nice shower/hair products). And oh the bed…i really didn’t wanna get up in the morning, it was too good. If it wasn’t for me wanting to have a delicious breakfast in the restaurant before my trip to the beach, or else i would still be there. The hallway is pretty funky with art work and fun lights. They have 5 different rooms with all their own interior. I had room no. 3 on the streetside and it was such a coool room and literally as the airconditioning made it a nice place to stay during a warm night. So yes, i went to my room a little earlier to watch some episodes of a serie on Netflix from that nice bed. The hotel is situated in the city center right around the corner of all the fun places. You can park your car nearby in parking place Raak which is about 10 minutes walk. Another fun detail, the personal touches in the room: a handwritten card, a personal information letter, a delicious room and face spray and a complimentary bottle of Pellegrino. And… i got a discountcode and i get to share it with you. The Niu Diary: situated in an old milk factory you find this modern design hotel. Unfortunately i could not stay another night in Haarlem, or else i would definetely booked a room here after checking out the photos on the website. Tipped by the girl that also gave me the tip of Maita, i can only guess it will be jsut as good! 🙂 Oh and it’s just around the corner of Patronaat, so if you are going to a party there, you can crawl to your hotel room.

Snack souveniers:
Unfortunately, no typical Haarlem snacks here either…but they do have booze. Ofcourse Jopenbier, which the Jopenkerk waich has a restaurant and the brewery is obviously the best place to taste it. Haarlem also has a lot of liquer/strong drinks which were according to the liquer store even more famous than Jopen beer…but i think the real locals will beg the difference ;). I mean, every where i went there was Jopen beer, from trucks to almost every drink menu of the places i visited. But hey, a nice snack to go with all the alcohol would have been nice.
So unfortunately not a little snack souvenier to take home, but for the foodies among us, it is really nice to visit Van der Pigge. This small old fashioned shop sells spices and herbs without anything added. And here you can get Haarlemmer oil which helps best when you have a cold, airway difficulties, gut problems and other physical problems (with other words, when you are in pain, swallow this if i have to believe the prescription…also fun ingesting it can be done by pouring a few drops onto a sugar cube or mix with alcohol (pretty sure they mean with a Jopen beer ;)!!) Oh and they also sell Haarlemmer Bruin which gives you a mega tan…but i just stayed with a safe UPF 50 protection but after hearing of it, i suddenly saw it everywhere. Maybe i should go back and buy both the oil and the Bruin. Which wouldn’t be a punishment as this cute old shop is so fun, it looks like time stood still here. Fun fact the miller told me, the little shop was meant to be thorn down to make place for V&D (Dutch department store in the 90’s). However the owner would have it and stubborn as he was, he didn’t move and V&D was out of luck, so evently they build around the store. The building also still has an old fashion gaper on the store front.
