Ja, het is even stil geweest op deze blog maar dat komt omdat ik emigreerde naar de leukste stad op deze hele aardbol (vind ik dan). Inmiddels woon ik hier alweer zo’n 9 maanden (bijna 10) en werd het wel weer eens tijd voor een budget style blogje. En nu is een ticket naar Buenos Aires natuurlijk wel wat prijziger, als je hier eenmaal bent kom je de achter dat de zin “The best things in life are free” hier wel heel letterlijk wordt genomen.

Hieronder vind je vijf leuke dingen om te doen als je in Buenos Aires bent en ze zijn allemaal helemaal gratis!

Botanische tuinen (Jardín Botánico)
Waar je in Amsterdam €13,50 neertikt voor een toegangskaartje, betaal je hier in Buenos Aires dus helemaal niks om te genieten van al het mooie groen, kleurige bloemen en stekelige cactussen. Dat afgewisseld met prachtige greenhouses (kassen), beelden en vijvers maakt de botanische tuin in Palermo echt een aanrader als je hier bent. Al is het maar om even de drukte van de stad te ontsnappen. Lopend door deze tuin vergeet je even dat het aan één van de drukste straten van Palermo grenst. Neem je camera mee voor de mooiste plaatjes of een boek om even helemaal te relaxen op een van de vele bankjes.

Cultuur Centrum (Centro Cultural Recoleta)
Naast de bekendste begraafplaats van Argentinië en misschien wel de wereld, staat het Cultuur Centrum. Een mooi beschildert gebouw (de buitenkant wordt om de paar maanden opnieuw beschildert door een kunstenaar) waar veel mensen al snel langs lopen om naar de begraafplaats te gaan. Eeuwig zonde, want het cultureel centrum is van binnen ook echt een aanrader! Met wisselende kunst, optredens en presentaties is er altijd wel iets te zien of te doen. Maar ook als je een inspirerend plek zoekt om te werken, want je kan er ook heerlijk even met je laptop gaan zitten in de daarvoor bestemde ruimte. Of een latte drinken in de mooie binnenplaats. En heb je kinderen, dan is dit ook echt een geweldige plek, want naast de kunst hebben ze ook genoeg te doen voor kinderen van alle leeftijden. Daarnaast heb je vanaf het grote balkon aan de achterkant ook nog eens een geweldig uitzicht over de stad.

Eco Park (Ecoparque)
Ook een aanrader met kinderen maar ook zeker voor volwassenen is het Eco Park in Palermo. Het ecopark was de voormalige dierentuin van Buenos Aires maar na vele protesten en ruimtegebrek besloot het park te sluiten en is nu een ecopark waar je tussen de kleine diertjes kan rondwandelen in een prachtig groene omgeving. De voormalige dierenverblijven worden omgebouwd tot leuke restaurantjes of leerzame omgeving (voor schoolkinderen). En ja, niet alle grote dieren konden een nieuw plekje ergens anders vinden, zo vind je er nog een dromedaris, aapjes, giraffen, lama’s, flamingo’s en struisvogels. Overigens zitten die wel veilig achter een hek. Maar Mara’s (een klein soort Capibara), otters, pauwen en eenden kunnen zo je pad kruisen.

Antiek/kunstmarkten
Zondagen in Buenos Aires staan in het teken van marktjes. De bekendste is de antiek markt van San Telmo waar je kunt rondsnuffelen op Plaza Dorrego waar de markt ooit begon maar als je Defensa volgt, je helemaal tot aan Plaza de Mayo kan lopen en je kan vergapen aan al het antiek maar ook handwerk, souveniertjes en mooie lederproducten. Aan het eind van de dag, als het wat rustiger is en wat kraampjes aan het opruimen zijn, kun je op Plaza Dorrego getrakteerd worden op een gratis tangoshow. En ook de gratis toegankelijke binnenplaatsen zijn de moeite waard om een kijkje te nemen. Mijn favoriet is Pasaje de la Defensa. Een ander bekende markt is onderaan de voet van Recoleta tot aan de begraafplaats (met de subte kun je metrostation Faculty de Derecho aanhouden en dan de kleurijke brug oversteken). Hier vind je vooral veel kunst en handwerk, wat leuke souveniertjes zijn om naar huis te nemen. Palermo heeft ook een kunstmarkt op en rond Plaza Serrano in de weekenden. Daarnaast worden er regelmatig thema markten georganiseerd, zoals bijvoorbeeld een Franse markt met heerlijk frans eten op Plaza Francia of een foodmarket bij de Hippodrome.

Rozentuin (Rosedale de Palermo)
Misschien wel de meest romantische plek in Buenos Aires waar je omringt wordt door meer dan 18.000 prachtige rozen. Natuurlijk zijn lente en zomer de hoogtij dagen waar de hele tuin in bloei staat en je door een wolk van parfum loopt maar ook tijdens de herfst en winter een bezoekje waard omdat ze ook soorten hebben die het hele jaar rond bloeien. En dan is er ook nog de mooie brug, prieeltjes en fonteinen, vooral de fontein van Patio Andaluz iets verderop in de tuin is prachtig met zijn mozaïekenvloer. En nee, niet gratis maar ook niet heel duur zijn de waterfietsen die je kunt huren om alles vanaf de grote vijver te kunnen bekijken. Tegenover het park is onder het spoor een tal van restaurantjes te vinden dus je kan ook een heerlijke lunch to go nemen en een kleine picknick houden tussen de rozen.

Yes, it’s been a bit quiet on this blog, but that’s because in the meantime i moved to the best city on this entire planet (in my opinion). I have been living here for a good 9 months now (almost 10) so I thought it was time for another budget style blog. And yes, a ticket to Buenos Aires isn’t the cheapest, but if you made it to this gorgeous city you will find out that the phrase “The best things in life are free” is been taken very literally down here.

Below you will find five fun things to do while in Buenos Aires and they are all free!

Botanical garden (Jardín Botánico)
In Amsterdam you have to pay a whooping €13,50 for an entrance ticket, here in Buenos Aires it’s completely free to enjoy all the beautiful green, colorful flowers and prickly cactus. That with a variation of beautiful greenhouses, sculptures and ponds makes the botanical garden in Palermo a Must Visit when you are here. Even if it’s just to escape the buzzing of the city for a little while. Wondering through the garden you forget it is on one of the busiest streets of Palermo. Take your camera for some nice shots or a book to totally relax on one of the many benches.

Culture center(Centro Cultural Recoleta)
Next to the most famous cemetery of Argentina or maybe the world, is the Culture Center. A beautiful painted building (the outside is being repainted every few months by a new artist) which people walk past on their way to the cemetery. Such a pity, as the cultural center is on the inside well worth a visit swell! With every changing art, shows and presentations there’s always something to see or do. But also if you are looking for an inspiring place to work, as they have a great space to sit down with your laptop. Or drink a latte in the courtyard. And if you have children, than this a great place to visit, as besides art they have enough fun activities for kids of all ages. And at the back on the grand balcony you have an amazing view over the city.

Eco Park (Ecoparque)
Another recommendation if you have children but also for adults is the Eco Park in Palermo. The ecopark used to be the zoo of Buenos Aires but after a lot of protest and limited space they decided to close down and now it’s an ecopark where you can walk surrounded by small animals in a beautiful green environment. The former animal enclosures are being rebuild into fun restaurants or teaching spaces (for school kids). And yes, not all the bigger animals have been relocated, you still can find a dromedary, monkeys, giraffes. lamas, flamingos and ostriches. Which are, by the way, safely behind a fence. But Maras (a small type of Capybara), otters, peacocks and ducks can still cross your path.

Antique/art markets
Sundays in Buenos Aires are all about markets. The most famous one is the antique market of San Telmo where you can treasure hunt at Plaza Dorrego where the market once started but if you follow Defensa, you can walk all the way to Plaza de Mayo and admire all the antiques but also handwork, souvenires and gorgeous leather products. At the end of the day, when it’s starts to slow down and some of the booths are clearing out, you can be treated to a free tangoshow ate Plaza Dorrego. And the free courtyards are worth a visit aswell. My favorite is Pasaje de la Defensa. An other well known market at the foot of Recoleta up to the cemetery (using the Subte, go to subte station Faculty de Derecho and cross the colorful bridge). Here you will mainly find art and handwork, which make great souvenirs to take home. Palermo also has a art market on and around Plaza Serrano in the weekends. And there are regularly theme markets being organized like for example a French market with delicious French food at Plaza Francia or a food market at the Hippodrome.

Rose garden (Rosedale de Palermo)
Maybe the most romantic place in Buenos Aires where you are surrounded by more than 18,000 gorgeous roses. Ofcourse spring and summer is when the whole garden is in bloom and you will walk trough a cloud of parfum but also worth a visit during fall or winter because they have types that bloom all year round. And than there is the beautiful bridge, gazebos and fountains, especially the fountain of Patio Andaluz a little further in the garden with a gorgeous mosaic floor. And no, not for free, but not very expensive either are the water bikes you can rent to see everything from the great pound. Across the park under the train tracks there are a lot of restaurants, so you can also order a lunch to go to have a little picnic in between the roses.
