Last but definetly not least, het bourgondische Maastricht. En extra leuk in kerstsfeer, wat de mooie straatjes en gebouwen nog sfeervoller maakte. Dit keer een dagje zonder nachtje want in dit laatste maandje in Nederland staat zoveel gepland. En dus iets minder tips, maar genoeg leuke plekjes te ontdekken of geniet gewoon van het heerlijke sfeertje op de mooie en grote kerstmarkt.

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean cake!
Peter Lemmens: en met cake bedoelen we in Limburg natuurlijk gewoon vlaai en die eet je het lekkerst bij Peter Lemmens. Het is hier zelfs zo dat in plaats van een koekje bij de koffie of thee, een stukje vlaai wordt geserveerd. De lunchroom zit iets buiten het centrum maar wel de moeite waard.

Leukste lunchplekjes:
De Bóbbel: we kregen dit plekje van de Maastrichtenaren zelf door en eerlijk is eerlijk, het is echt een leuk plekje in een mooi straatje. Het eten is ook heerlijk! MAAR helaas, heb je een allergie of lust je iets niet, dan zal ik dit zeker afraden. De bediening is niet op de hoogte van de gerechten en als je vraagt of iets bijv. volkoren bevat dan krijg je alleen als antwoord dat de gerechten niet aangepast kunnen worden, bij navraag aan de manager. Een uitleg over wat Viking brood inhoudt, had het probleem al kunnen oplossen, want waarbij ik daar een soort van robuust brood verwachtte met zaden, volkoren en noten, bleek het achteraf gewoon het ronde platte witte brood van de Ikea te zijn. Ook werden we al de deur uitgekeken met nog net een fijne dag zonder überhaupt een rekening te krijgen, en toen ik toch nog netjes aangaf te willen betalen, was de rekening behoorlijk hoog voor de service die je krijgt. Zelf bij navraag bij de manager, kreeg ik het arrogante antwoord dat de bediening geen uitleg hoefde te geven maar dat als je echt een allergie hebt dat ze dan wel kunnen aanpassen. Uhm…oké? Nu zijn er gelukkig nog heel veel leuke andere tentjes in Maastricht, zoals:
De Brandweerkantine: in de voormalige brandweerkazerne van Maastricht, kun je hier heerlijk bijkomen na het shoppen. Het interieur is minimalistisch maar gezellig. Wij kwamen hier om even op te warmen, en al stond het niet op de kaart, ze serveren er ook een heerlijke warme chocomelk met slagroom!

To do:
Magisch Maastricht:: ik had al zo’n vermoeden dat Maastricht het leukst was om in december naar toe te gaan en Magisch Maastricht bevestigde dat zeker. Wat een gezelligheid op het Vrijthof. Veel kraampjes met typische kerstmarkt lekkernijen, een leuke photobooth, een prachtig reuzerad met uitzicht over de hele stad en een hoek met lokale producten. De hele maand december kun je hier van de Limburgse gezelligheid en gastvrijheid genieten.
Shoppen: van budget tot dure merken, Maastricht heeft het allemaal en ook nog eens in de mooiste straatjes en pandjes.

Staying for dinner?
Sjiek: dit werd echt zo vaak getipt, dat we eigenlijk niet eens ergens anders heen durfde te gaan. En gelukkig hebben we dat ook niet gedaan, want deze gezellige bistro serveert Limburgse gerechten en het zoervleis (zuurvlees) is echt een aanrader. Reserveren kan niet, maar als je niet gelijk een plekje hebt, dan kun je aan de bar een drankje nemen, want het is het wachten zeker waard.

Snack Souveniers:
Natuurlijk kun je Limburg niet verlaten zonder een vlaai (en dan natuurlijk wel eentje van Peter Lemmens), maar iets bijzonderder zijn de Luxury Dadel Bonbons van Herbs and Lime. Te krijgen op de kerstmarkt in het hoekje met de lokale producten of bij de Bijenkorf.

Last but definetly not least, Burgundy Maastricht. And extra fun when in Christmas spirit, which makes the beautiful streets and buildings even cozier. This time without staying the night as i had too much planned for this last month in The Netherlands. So a little less tips than ussual, but there are so many fun places to discover or just enjoy the fun atmosphere at the beautiful and big Christmas Market.

Coffee, tea…me? Uh i mean cake!
Peter Lemmens: and ofcourse we mean Vlaai (pie) in Limburg instead of cake and the best one you get at Peter Lemmens. The even serve a piece of Vlaai instead of a cookie with your tea or coffee. The lunchroom is a little outside the center but worth the walk.

Best lunch places:
De Bóbbel: we got this tip from locals and honestly, it is a nice place in a beautiful street. And the food is delicious! BUT unfortunately, if you have an food allergy or don’t like something, i defintetly wouldn’t recommend it. The waitress doesn’t know the dishes and if you ask if something has wheat in it (for example), the responds is that they won’t change their dishes, after asking the manager. If they had just explained that the Viking bread was, the problem would have been solved. As i expected it to be a rough bread filled with seeds, wheat and nuts, but instead it was the round flatbread of Ikea. When finished they were so happy to see us leave, the barely said goodbye and forgot to charge us. When i reminded them that i wanted to pay, i got a bill that was a little too high for the service they provide. Even talking to the manager i got an arrogant response that the waitress didn’t need to explain the dishes but if you really have an allergy, they would be able to provide an alternative. Uhm…okay? Luckly, there are many more fun places in Maastricht, like:
De Brandweerkantine: a good place to take a shopping break is in the former fire station of Maastricht. The interior is minimalistic but cozy. We came here to warm up, and eventhough it was not on their menu, they do serve a delicious hot chocolate milk with cream!

To do:
Magisch Maastricht:: i already expected Maastricht to be extra cozy in December and Magical Maastricht confirms it. So much fun on the Vrijthof. Lots of stalls with typical Christmas market goodies, a fun photobooth, a gorgeous ferris wheel with a view over the whole city and a corner full of local products. The whole month of December you can enjoy the Limburg’s cozyness and hospitality.
Shopping: from budget to expensive brands, Maastricht has it all and also in the most gorgeous streets and buildings.

Staying for dinner?
Sjiek: we got this tip so much, that we didn’t even dare to go somewhere else. And luckly we did as this cozy bistro serves Limburg dishes and the zoervleis (stewed meat) is definetly the highlight. You can’t make reservations, but if they don’t have a table free yet, than have a drink at the bar, as it is worth the wait.

Snack Souveniers:
You can’t leave Limburg without vlaai (and ofcourse it has to be of Peter Lemmens), but even more special are the Luxury Dadel Bonbons of Herbs and Lime. Available at the Christmas market in the local corner or at the Bijenkorf.
