Mijn tweede stad tijdens mijn “afscheidstour” om te bezoeken is Den Bosch en hoe toepasselijk is het dan dat deze blog online komt tijdens de carnaval want daar staat deze stad toch wel om bekend. Gelukkig voor mij, als carnaval haatster van boven de rivieren, is Den Bosch de rest van het jaar ook supergezellig en als je van het bourgondische leven houdt, dan kom je hier heel goed aan je trekken!

Hoe kom je er?
Trein: het station van Den Bosch is echt op steenworp afstand van het centrum en zo loop je al gezellig van het station naar alle leuke plekjes.
Parkeren: een low budget oplossing als je met de auto komt, op de P&R van Den Bosch, De Vliert, parkeer je de hele dag voor maar €4,50 en kun je met max. 4 personen gratis op vertoon van het kaartje met de bus naar het centrum van Den Bosch. Kleine waarschuwing: kijk goed tot hoe laat je terug gaat, de bus rijdt namelijk niet elke dag tot laat terug naar de parkeerplaats (zie a-tje achter de tijden bij de bushalte). En ja, ervaring, wij stonden dus voor niks bij de bushalte…oops!

Coffee, tea…me? Uh in mean..cake!
Jan de Groot: een dagje Den Bosch zonder Bossche Bol is als Carnaval vieren zonder polonaise…en eerlijk, beide zijn niet aan mij besteed dus ja, ik verliet deze leuke stad zonder deze sjekladebol. MAAR mocht je nou wel gek zijn op deze enorme units gevuld met slagroom, dan is Jan de Groot wel echt the place to be. Ze hebben een lunchroom waar je er even rustig voor kan gaan zitten. En voor de kleinere eters zijn er tegenwoordig ook nog mini bollen, zodat je ook nog plek overhoudt voor een lekkere lunch.
Frenchie Café:
als je van roze, unicorns en lekkere koffietjes houdt, dan zit je bij het Frenchie Café helemaal goed, want dat is precies wat dit schattige cafeetje biedt. Overigens ook perfect voor een lekker ontbijtje…de stapel pancakes die ik voorbij zag komen, zagen er ook superheerlijk uit! En voor de IG fans…alles is zeer Insta-picture-perfect ;)(zie foto’s)!
DIT: getipt door een lieve volgster op Instagram, dus zelf niet geweest, maar als ik de kaart zo bekijk, zeker een leuk & lekker plekje in Den Bosch voor koffie met iets lekkers of een heerlijk ontbijtje.

Leukste lunch plekjes
Hello my Friend: deze werd dus ook getipt door een volgster op Insta en toen ik reserveerde kwam zelfs een foto voorbij van Kelsey van Kuukskes & De Bossche Buik (de laatste is ook zeker een tip om even op te kijken als je een dagje DB wilt doen), dus ik wist zeker dat dit tentje leuk zou zijn. En we werden zeker niet teleurgesteld. Een superleuke inrichting, fijn personeel en natuurlijk het belangrijkste…lekkere broodjes! Ik raad het broodje Bahn Mi Buikspek aan. (niet voor een kleine eter bij de way ;), zie foto!)
Bolwerk Den Bosch: tja als je maar 1 dagje in Den Bosch bent, dan kun je helaas maar naar 1 plekje om te lunchen, dus deze en de volgende zijn tips van mijn lieve volgers op IG. En uiteraard check ik altijd even de website & menukaart en de eerste foto op de site maakt wel dat ik misschien toch nog eventjes terug moet komen in de zomer. Bolwerk zit namelijk aan het water en het terras én menukaart zien er echt heel goed uit! En vooral het broodje kaas met appelstroop is typisch Brabants (en uiteraard staat er ook een worstenbroodje op!).
Yalla Yalla: Vegan of Vegetarisch, dan wordt je vast hier heel erg happy van en nog happier als je het lekker vindt om niet van 1 gerechtje te smullen maar te genieten van meerdere hapjes. De shared lunch klinkt echt heerlijk! Oh en toch liever vlees, ook dat is geen probleem! En alles met een Arabisch flavour. Ook leuk om te weten, op de site staat dat de gerechten geïnspireerd zijn door Ottolenghi…dat beloofd wat!

To do
Carnaval: zeg je Den Bosch dan zeg je Carnaval! Niks zegt meer Brabantse gezelligheid dan 4 of 5 dagen volledig uit je dak gaan en oh wat hebben de Bosschenaren het gemist. Overal tijdens mijn dagje uit kwam je wel een referentie tegen, of het nou 1 van de vele carnavalswinkels was, kikkers in de etalages of vlaggetjes door de stad met de kleuren rood, wit en geel. En ja, als iemand boven de rivieren ben ik niet echt een hele grote fan van carnaval maar wie weet was dat heel anders geweest als ik het in Brabant had gevierd. Eerlijk is eerlijk, iedereen die ik sprak was zooo enthousiast. Dus mocht je zin hebben, morgen kun je nog een dagje afreizen naar Den Bosch maar gezien de omstandigheden is het misschien beter dit volgend jaar te doen.
Workshop Bossche Bol of Brabants worstenbroodje: zelf het geheim ontdekken van die heerlijke sjekladebol (zoals de Bosschenaren het noemen) of de lekkerste echte Brabantse worstenbroodjes, bij Bakkerij Royal kun je zelf aan de slag tijdens een workshop. Prijs per persoon €27 (bij een groep vanaf 6 personen).
Beklim de Sint-Janstoren: hierbij beloof ik alvast dat ik niet bij elke city blog de kerktoren in klim, maar aangezien mijn eerste keuze, een rondvaart door de Binnendieze, pas vanaf april mogelijk is, koos ik toch maar voor een beklimming. Zo konden we gelijk alle calorieën verbranden van de lunch en Den Bosch van bovenaf bewonderen. We kregen een hele aardige gids die echt zoveel wist te vertellen over de geschiedenis van Den Bosch en de kerk, de jaartallen vlogen ons om de oren, terwijl we de 218 treden beklommen. Gelukkig hoef je deze niet achter elkaar te zetten want er zijn verschillende verdiepingen, zo ook waar je de klokken ziet hangen, wat erg leuk is om een keer te zien…behalve dan als ze afgaan op het moment dat je net deze verdieping betreedt. Gelukkig weet de gids precies wanneer dit is, dus oordoppen zijn niet nodig. (nouja, de timing was bij het naar beneden gaan net iets minder goed gepland, hahaha!). Hou je van geschiedenis en heb je geen hoogtevrees (bovenop sta je 43 meter boven de grond), dan is dit zeker een aanrader. En ja, zelfs ons lieve mam heeft de klim overleefd en dat met gladde wenteltrapjes, stenen trappen en krappe treden.
Behoefte aan wat advies van bovenaf, net als bij ons in Arnhem, heeft de architect hier ook een grapje uitgehaald en heeft de Sint Jan dus een beeldje van een engel met een mobieltje…en ja, daar kun je dus mee bellen!

Staying for dinner?
Sitio:getipt door meerdere volgers en nummer 5 op de lijst van beste restaurants van Den Bosch volgens Tripadvisor.nl maakte dat ik eigenlijk niet eens meer verder hoefde te kijken, hier wou ik eten! Helaas besloot het lot anders, want een dag na ik de reservering maakte kreeg ik een mailtje dat de hele keukenbrigade was getroffen door corona. Helaas…hopelijk heb jij meer geluk als je besluit een dagje DB lekker af te sluiten.
Stadsbistro Christoffel: nu stond er in het mailtje ook 2 van hun andere restaurants getipt, dus besloot ik voor Christoffel te gaan omdat de Franse menukaart mij wel heel erg aansprak. Het eten was ook echt heerlijk, de inrichting prachtig en het personeel is ook heel vriendelijk. Voel je een “maar” aankomen…hahahah dan komt dat eigenlijk meer door het feit dat onze buiken al goed gevuld waren en het begrip bourgondisch hier heel letterlijk wordt genomen. De porties zijn groot. We kozen allebei voor de kreeftsalade, maar het was eigenlijk meer een soort Pokébowl Deluxe XXL (alleen de rijst miste nog). Dus mocht je net als ons al hebben genoten van alle andere lekkernijen die Den Bosch te bieden heeft, ga dan voor of alleen een voorgerecht (of 2 kleinere voorgerechtjes) of hoofdgerecht. Of bezoek ze tijdens de lunch, dit werd vooral aangeraden door het lieve meisje dat ons bediende.
Eetbar De Stadt: dat we zo vol zaten kwam ook doordat we na de klim wel een drankje verdient hadden, dus besloten we op aanraden van een lieve volgster dit te doen bij Eetbar de Stadt en werden verleid door de hapjeskaart. De balletjes van Tristan waren niet helemaal onze smaak (wel een leuke omschrijving ;)!) maar de Bao Bun met eend is wel echt een aanrader (zie foto’s). En hoe meer het richting etenstijd ging, hoe voller het werd, en dat zelfs op een woensdagavond, dus dan moet het wel goed zijn. Geen zin in grote maaltijd dan is de streetfood kaart (met o.a. verschillende Bao’s) erg fijn voor bij een borrel! Tip van mijn volgster: de Pornstar Martini is heerlijk!

Voulez vous coucher?
Omdat mijn ouders vrij dicht bij Den Bosch wonen, zijn we niet blijven slapen, maar kreeg ik wel van de ober bij Hello my friend wat leuke slaapplekjes door!
Hotel Haverkist: tegenover Hello My Friend zit hotel Haverkist dus liepen we even langs. Een fijn plekje dicht bij alle gezelligheid en na het zien van de kamers op de website is het toch wel heel jammer dat we niet een nachtje zijn gebleven! Mooie kamers in een heel mooi pand, dus zeker een aanrader.
Hotel Julien: dichtbij het station en de Bossche bollen van meneer de Groot vind je hotel Julien in een monumentaal pand en als ik de website zo zie, moet ik misschien maar terugkomen, want die Deluxe kamer is wel echt mijn smaak ;)!
De Bossche Kraan: deze tip vond ik op de site van Kelsey, de Bossche buik, en klinkt ook echt geweldig. Net iets anders dan een doorsnee hotel. Hier slaap je namelijk op hoogte in een echte kraan die omgebouwd is tot hotelkamer. Iets te vieren en zin in een bijzonder avondje, dan ben je hier wel aan het juiste adres.

Snack souvenirs
Bosche Bollen: tja inkoppertje… o.a. dus te krijgen bij Jan de Groot
Bossche Kussen: hier was ik wel heel nieuwsgierig naar, maar we waren net te laat! Maar ze klinken heel lekker en gelukkig zijn het kleine kusjes vergeleken bij de bollen die ze verkopen (ook bij Jan de Groot).
Worstenbroodjes: zeg je Brabant dan zeg je worstenbroodjes, eigenlijk net zo bekend als carnaval en ook een perfecte snack tijdens het feestvieren. Maar ook voor een snelle lunch of tussendoortje want heel fijn om to go te eten!
Zakje Liefde/Carnavals kikkertjes: iemand geveld door corona tijdens de leukste dagen van het jaar in Den Bosch, dan is een zakje (carnavals) kikkertjes wel een hele leuke opkikker! Elk andere dag van het jaar trouwens ook, of ga dan voor een zakje liefde. Overigens verkopen ze bij de Bossche Suikeroom niet alleen leuke zakjes en (oud)Hollands snoep, maar kun je hier ook terecht voor niet-eetbare souvenirs, zoals deze geweldige Bossche Bol als kerstbal (zie foto)…voor de echte fan ;)!

My second city during my “goodbye tour” to visit is Den Bosch and how appropiate is to put this blog online during carnaval, something this city is known for. Luckly for me, who hates carnaval as someone from above the rivers, Den Bosch is also very nice the rest of the year and if you like the exuberant lifestyle, this is the place to be!

How to get there?
Train: Den Bosch train station is really close to the city center and from there you will be able to get to all the cute spots.
Parking: a low budget solution if you are coming by car, at P&R of Den Bosch, De Vliert, you pay only €4,50 to park all day and you can travel for free up to max. 4 persons with the parking ticket on the bus that will take you to the City Center. Little warning: check (double check) untill what time the bus drives back to the parking spot (see a-‘s behind the times at the busstop) as the bus doesn’t drive till late every day of the week. And yes, i’m talking from experience, we were looking a bit foolish waiting for a bus that didn’t came…oops!

Coffee, tea…me? Uh in mean..cake!
Jan de Groot: a day out to Den Bosch without Bossche Bol is like celebrating Carnaval without conga line…and well to be honest, both don’t float my boat, so yes, i left this nice city without chocolate ball. BUT if you are fan of these gigantic units filled with whipped cream, than Jan de Groot is really the place to be. They have a lunchroom so you can take your time to devour them. And for the smaller eaters they have mini balls nowadays, so you can keep a little room for lunch.
Frenchie Café:
if you like pink, unicorns and delicious coffees, you are at the right place at Frenchie Café
as that is exactly what this cute little place has to offer. Also really a perfect breakfast spot…the pancake stack that went to another table looked super delicious! And for all the IG fans…everything in here is very Insta-picture-perfect ;)(see photo’s)!
DIT: a tip from a sweet followster on Instagram, so i haven’t been myself, but as i looked online on the menu, definetly a cute & delicious place in Den Bosch for coffee and a treat or a delicious breakfast.

Nice lunch spots
Hello my Friend: also a tip by a followster on Insta and when i made online reservations a photo of Kelsey of Kuukskes & De Bossche Buik (the last one is definetly a tip to have a look at when going to DB for a day) popped up, so i just knew this place had to be good. And we were definetely not dissapointed. A super cute interior, sweet staff and ofcourse the most important thing…delicious sandwiches! I recommend the Bahn Mi Pork Belly. (not for smaller eaters by the way ;), see photo!)
Bolwerk Den Bosch: the problem is that when you are only 1 day in Den Bosch, you can only visit one place for lunch, so this one and the next are tips of my sweet followers on IG. And ofcourse i do always check the website and menu online and the first photo on the site make me re-consider to come back to DB in the summer. Bolwerk is next to the water and the terrace and menu look really really good! Especially the sandwich cheese with applespread is typical for the region (and ofcourse they also have sausage rolls!).
Yalla Yalla: Vegan or vegetarion, than this place will make you very happy and even happier if you like to enjoy not one, but more different bites. The shared lunch really sounds delicious! Oh and if you do prefer meat, that’s no problem either! And everything has an Arabic flavour. Also fun to know, on their site it says that they are inspired by Ottolenghi…so that’s promises good things!

To do
Carnaval: if you say Den Bosch than you say Carnaval! Nothing spells out Brabants hospitality than 4 or 5 days of celebrations and oh how have the Bosschenaren missed this. Where eve i went in Den Bosch during my visit i saw reference to the biggest party of the year, like one of the many carnaval shops, frogs in the shopwindows or flags throughout the whole city in the colors red, white and yellow. And yes, as someone from above the rivers i’m not a big fan of carnaval but who knows, i might have been if i had celebrated it in Brabant. As honestly, everyone i spoke to that day was sooo enthousiastic. So if you feel like partying, you have one more day to travel to Den Bosch but under these circumstances, you might be better off going next year.
Workshop Bossche Bol or Brabants worstenbroodje: discover the secret of the delicious sjekladebol (as the Bosschenaren call it) or the delicious real Brabant’s sausage roll, at Bakkerij Royal you can make them yourself during a workshop. Price per person €27 (with a group of 6 persons).
Climb the Sint-Janstower: i hereby promise i won’t climb every church tower in every city blog, but as my first choice, a boattrip though the Binnendieze, was only available from April, i decided to go for the climb afterall. This way we could burn the calories of the lunch and view Den Bosch from above. We had a really nice guide that knew sooo much the history of Den Bosch and the church, the years flew by as we climbed the 218 steps. Luckly you don’t have to do them all at once as there are different levels, like one were you can see the clocks, which is nice to see…except if they go off when you reach that level. Luckly the guide knows exactly when this is, so earplugs are not necessary. (well, the timing when going down was a just a bit off, hahaha!). If you like history and aren’t afraid of heights (when reaching the top you are 43 meters from the ground), than i totally recommend this. And yes, even my sweet mum has survived this climb even with slippery spiral staircases, stone staircases and tight spaces.
If you feel like some advice from above, just like in Arnhem, the architect has also played a little trick here and the Sint Jan has a Angel holding a cellphone…and yes, you can call her!

Staying for dinner?
Sitio: tipped the most by my followers and no. 5 on the list of best restaurants of Den Bosch according to Tripadvisor.nl made it easy to decide, this is where i want to have dinner! Unfortunately faith decided otherwise as a day after making the reservation i got an e-mail stating that the entire kitchencrew had corona. Too bad…hopefully you have more luck when you decided to finish you day out in Den Bosch in a delicious way.
Stadsbistro Christoffel: in that same mail the informed me about their 2 other restaurant, so i decided to go for Christoffel instead as their French inspired menu spoke to me. The food is really delicious, the interior is beautiful and the staff really friendly. If you feel a “but” coming, you are right..hahaha but that’s mostly because we were so full and they take the statement Exuberant really literally. The portions are big. We both choose the lobster salas, but it was more like a Pokébowl Deluxe XXL (only the rice was missing). So if you have enjoyed all the other good stuff Den Bosch has to offer during the day, just like us, i recommend going for just a entree (or 2 small ones) or just a main. Or visit them during lunch, as the sweet girl who served us recommend.
Eetbar De Stadt: the reason we were so full was also that we deserved a drink after the big climb, so we decided to visit Eetbar de Stadt as recommended by a sweet follower and were seduced by the bites menu. The balls of Tristan weren’t really our taste (but loved the describtion ;)!) but the Bao Bun with duck is really really good (see photo’s). And the place really started to fill up around dinnertime, even on a ordinary Wednesday evening, so it must be good. Don’t feel like a big meal, the streetfood menu (with a.o. different Bao’s) is really nice with a drink! Tip of my followster: the Pornstar Martini is delicious!

Voulez vous coucher?
As my parents live pretty close to Den Bosch, we didn’t stay over, but the waiter at Hello my Friend did give me some cute places to sleep tips!
Hotel Haverkist: across Hello My Friend is hotel Haverkist so we decided to have a quick peek. A cozy spot close to all the fun and after seeing the rooms online i kinda regret not staying the night! Beautiful rooms in a very beautiful building, so definetly a recommendation.
Hotel Julien: close to the train station and the Bossche bollen of mister de Groot you will find hotel Julien in a monumental building and after checking the websit, i might have to come back, as that Deluxe room is really my style ;)!
De Bossche Kraan: i found this tip on the site ofn Kelsey, de Bossche buik, and it really sounds amazing. Just a little different than your ussual hotel. Here you will sleep far above the ground in a really crane that is turned into hotel room. Have something to celebrate and feel like something special, that this is the place to be.

Snack souvenirs
Bosche Bollen: the ussual suspects…a.o. available at Jan de Groot
Bossche Kussen: i was kinda curious about these, but we were only just too late! But they sound delicious and luckly they are small kisses compared to the balls they sell (also at Jan de Groot).
Sausage rolls: if you say Brabant you say sausage rolls, just as famous as carnaval and the perfect snack during celebrations. But also as a quick lunch or snack as it’s really easy to eat on the go!
Zakje Liefde/Carnavals kikkertjes: (wo)man down because of corona during the most fun days of the year in Den Bosch, a little bag of (carnavals) frogs will cheer them up! Any other day of the year aswell, or go for a bag of love instead. Oh and they don’t only sell cut bags and old Dutch candy at the Bossche Suikeroom, but you can also buy non-eatable souvenires, like this amazing Bossche Bol christmas decoration (see photo)…for the real fan ;)!
